ally happy in our military ruler. Even his
own subjects were praising Ilia moderation,
bis courtesy, and hi* delicate oonaideratiou

now, and Gen. Pope is working might and
main, in the blundering, stupid fashion char,
nctcristic of the soldier meddling with poli
ties, for the purpose ot winning the plaudits
of congressional Jncobins. In his blind sea'
bo rims a muck at shadows, or the air drawn
visions ot Ilia heat oppressed braid, 1 strikes
down what lie should uphold, and pens let
tors and proclamations when his pen should
lie as little used as Ids sword was during the
Iste war.. Experience should teach him
that it ia' as dangorbus to toeddlo witli the

rstlier stop a bulltt than fill a cartoon In
Punch. But this lintl a matter of taste, and
t ho publio are in no doubt M to tha direction

Mn. Euitok:—I have often heard per

to tho cuitirstion of cotton in our Southern

years has satisfied mo to tho contrary. If
yon, or nny of your readers will take a ride

Crops cultivated by negroes, and thoac cul

there is a' very great preponderance in fkvor
of tho white man. The whit* man culti

oorn and cotton, while in moat instances
tho negro will make a auperb crop of hay.
His latinos*, ids tig-sag ploughing and care-
lea* cultivation generally results in a very
inefficient yield. The truth is, the negro
is hard to stimulato,. if he gets his fill of
meat and broad he ia artisfled for the time
being, and oaret nothing for himself, and
lets for his employer. Give n white roan
and a nogro nn equal quantity of ground

former will make a fair crop, while that of
ihu latter will not pay for tha tronbloand
