The minced lilt men, at the last meeting
of the Board of Fire Masters, presented a
series of resolutions, claiming that t heir first
atxl second officers were cut tiled to seats ns
members of tho Board, under the law crea
ting the department.
'1 lie first resolutions set forth the fact that
the rules and regulations adopted by the
Board are confirmed by the City Council
and, therefore, are the law of tho depart
ment. The second states that the first and
second officers of the colored companies nre
not on the roll of tho members ol the Bonrd
and they a tv deprived of tho privilege ol
voting. Tho third says the department
grants rights to white officers auu none to
the colored ; nnd they feel it a duty as citi
zens and firemen to ask for the Hattie rights;
that they have performed their duty faith
fully for over ibrly years, and should enjoy
all their rights, i’lie fourth resolution de
clares that only the white officers of incor
porated companies are allowed to wear
iiadges. In the next they say that they
feel that they are excluded front a position
to which they are entitled. ,
As we stated above, immediately upon
their entering into office, the new Board
proceeded to place the colored firemen upon
a better footing by allowing them to elect
their own officers, giving ilium the name
privilege as the head of the white organiza
tion.
The law creating the department says
that the first and second officers of incor-
tho
com
panies have never been incorporated, there
fore their officers are not entitled to the
rights they ask for. While we nro ever
ready to give them due credit and recog
nize their faithful services, wo must sav that
the law is against them ; and until an net
is passed by the Legislature of the State in
corporating each company, the claim of the
first and second officers to seats in the
Board is not a just one.

body is becomiug alarmed nt the luckless
manner in which young ladies now n-days
wear their hair. It is distressing lo contem
plate the breadth and magnitude nf their
waterfalls. We heard ot un incident yes
terday in which a young lady who delights
in wearing one uf those enormous bunches
of hair on tlte back of Iter head, entile very
near losing Iter life. She wits crossing the
street in front of a team, when tho wagon
tongue struck her waterfall nnd threw iter
down, nml bail it not been for the prompt
exertions of tho driver in stopping his team,
she would have been bndly hurt. We also
notice by an article in an oxehango ihat n
young I ,dy was nearly killed by her water
fall, a few days ago near Spriugheld. She
was la ntrcc for some purpose or other, and
in attempting to descend, tho knob on the
hack of Iter Iter bend caught upon a lintb,
and falling, slio was as effectually suspended
as with a hangman’s noose. Tho situation
was extremely tinpleasa-. t and delicate, blit
