A forerunner of a storm is a water¬
spout, which is one of the most impres¬
sive and awe-inspiring sights st sea.
The explanation of its being is simple
enough. A whirlwind or gyrating cur
rent of air seizes the water as on land it
snatches up sand or dust aud whirls it
up to the clouds, which thus receive
(k.me of their moisture of which they
are compoeed. I saw a cunous illustra¬
tion of this once when sailing in a boat
near the shore, the wind being about
nor’-north west, and the weather very
dry. I observed a thread-like column
of dost on the land sknrrying toward the
water—it was a small whirlwind; no
sooner did it touch the water than the
column turned as if by magic into water,
coming with great rapidity toward the
boat. I at onoe luffed and let go the
sheet, aud the water-spout passed within
two or three yards off, and was perhaps
three to fonr inches in diameter. But a
real, live water-spout, that means mis¬
chief, is a sublime object, to be regarded
with just apprehension by all sailors,
for they are sometimes sufficiently large
and violent to founder a shijf. A cannon¬
ball brought to bear on one will, how¬
ever, sometimes cause it to break.
When there are several in a row, as I
have where repeatedly they seen especially them in the Black
sea, are common,
pillars they look like a colonnade of majestic
supporting the sky. I never
shall forget a magnificent water-spout
that nearly overwhelmed us one gloomy
twilight in the Gulf Stream. It was
blowing very fresh about dusk, when
the captain came out to take another
look befcre sapper. The man at the
wheel was looking into the binnacle,
and no one else had seen a huge water¬
spout, which the captain perceived as
soon as he put his head out of the com¬
panion-way. It was advancing with
great velocity direotly on a line with the
ship and was alarmingly near. The
captain sprang to the wheel, and, push¬
ing the helmsman aside, put the helm
down and kept away several points, and
the water-spout passed just astern; an¬
other minute of delay and the brave
little bark would have carried her crew
to Davy Jones.— S, Q. W. Benjamin.
The Mother of Forty-Four Children.
resident Mary, wife Washington, of William Austin, now a
of has had forty
feur children, only eleven of them born
alive. She had twins thirteen times,
and triplots six times. Her sister, Mrs.
Carrie Kinney, aged forty-three, has
had twenty-six children, and her hus¬
band’s sister has had forty-one children,
making a total of 111 for three women.
This seems almost incredible, though
the figures are vouched for. Mrs. Aus¬
tin, a native of South Carolina, and
reared in Tennessee, is the daughter of
John G. Klind, a printer. She is a reg¬
ular physician, and has practiced for
twenty-five the years, having been one of
first women doctors in the country,
She studied medicine in New Orleans
under the well-known Dr. Stone. She
lost an eye while with the Federal army
in the Valley of Virginia, received
medals for the able and fearless manner
in which she had discharged her duty,
and was granted, likewise, a regular
commission. She is fifty-four, of good
proportions and appearance, and, as may
be inferred, of vigorous constitution.
Her husband was also in the Federal
army, and bears the marks of a score of
serious wounds, which would have
killed any man less tough.
The Paper Age.
We have had the golden age and the
iron age, and now we are in the paper
age. There are paper boats and paper
car wheels, paper clothing and paper
money, and an English captain has dis¬
covered that a war vessel can be ad¬
vantageously coated with paper. When
the Seraphic last set sail for India Capt.
Warren had her bottom thoroughly
coated with paper, applied by means of
a cement of his own devising. After
making the voyage and lying in port
three months the bottom remained free
from marine incrustations except in a
few places where the paper had been
rubbed off. As the material is very
cheap and the method of its application
is simple, the discovery is likely to rev¬
olutionize marine construction in at
least this detail. It may also revolu¬
tionize all modern warfare. May not a
paper ship with paper sails loom np in
the future, and may not another paper
ship batter the first paper ship to pieces
with paper balls from paper cannon, and
then, of course, the full account of the
fight will be published in the papers
of next morning.
