’Tis true that’all the individu
als in a community, whether in
town or country, cannot be parties
pants in rk individual or associa
tive enterprise, but by mutual co
operation of effort and harmony
of sentiment, all can be aid-
ora and abettors of the same,
and cau be helpful in pushing an
enterprise to sac-cess.
Is short-, the- spirit cf co-opera
tion tends to bring about- a cohe
sion among the people and a solid
ification of sentiment in a com
mon cause, and greatly tends to
drive out that selfish spirit that
leads, for instance, one to pull
down his neighbor and hinder his
success, that he may, perchance,
advance hist own individual inter-
No community or people domi
nated by that selfish spirit that is
ever seeking individual gain, re
gardless of the well being of oth
ers, can ever become strong
harmonious sentiment, or progres
sive in spirit, On the contrary,
that people who are co-operative
in sentiment, in effort, in sympa
thy, in good will, the one for an
other, wilt eugender among them
selves a spirit of progress, and will
bring prosperity and success to
their labors.
H an individual, or an associa
tion of individuals, possessed with
a public spirit, establishes any new
enterprise in a community, that-
cantains within itgelf the promise
of good results, it is not only pol
icy, blit |t is wisdom itself^ foi;
each individual of that community
to encourage and foster that en-
tesprise by bv. kind words, by evi
dences of good will, and to endeav
or-by all means at their command,
to- push the same to success. This
grows out of the fact that each in
dividual of a community is a part
of the whole, and whatever bene-
1 a part, benefits the whole,
we do not mean by

manifestations of sympathy, kind
words and moral support, and when
one is straggling under adverse
circumstances, extend to that one a
helping hand instead of the hand
of oppression.
This is the kind of co-operation
we; would like to see practiced all
over this land; for when such a
spirit of co-operation, instead of
the selfish spirit that now seems
to prevail almost universally, is
allowed to control the actions and
motives of all the people, then
many a poor straggler who
per cent are now liars and the, bal
ance maintain their honesty .only
by being bound hand and foot by
mortgages. The schools in their
community are farces and the
teachers ignoramuses. The road
commissioners never 'do anything
to the roads until the week before
court! convenes and are totally un
fit for the position. And so on. and
so on ad infinitum- the stranger
seeking information is gorged up
on sock details of general cussed
ness, generally prevailing, that he
flees te escape the robbery of his
purse, the chains of political thral
dom, the pollution of social turpi
tude, the darkness of illiteracy and
final burial alive in a dead com

Services of these men to defend
the Union, no braver soldiers could
be found..
The above is frem the Boston
Herald.
The confederate soldier is not
now a, beggar, nor will he ever be.
He shouldered his musket and
fought for a cause which he con
sidered right and just. When
overpowered by 7 numbers, lie laid
down his musket and returned to
his desolate home, and with true
southern courage began the work
of retrieving iris fallen fortunes.
Many of them have been success
ful, others have been overtaken by
dusforinas and sickness, from the
exposure * and wounds received
while, battling under the flag of
the Southern' Confederacy. These
men certainly deserve some recog
nition from the ’states for whom
they fought.
There are no more loyal citizens in
the Union to-day than the ex-con
federates. Should the time ever
come when their services are need
ed for its preservation, they would
be the first to respond to the call
and the last to lay down their
arms.
There is nothing in the past of
which the confederate soldier need
be ashamed, either as a man or as
a soldier. These facts will be re
corded in the impartial history of
the country.

.The newspapers chronicle the
touching • fact that the German
Princess Sophia, the Emperors

ishing up her modern Greek' in a
most praiseworthy manner, and
has already written a congratula

the 25th 3 ear of his reign. This
Greek father-in-law, who, by the
way, is a Dane, is really not wor
thy of all the attention he gete.
He is probably the meanest king
-alive, from a financial point of
view, and has sated an
fortune out of the Greek people,-
and spends as little as he possibly
can. It is for this reason that the
Greeks share to a great extent the
opinion of diplomatists that King
George had better resign in favor
of his son who is inclined to spend
all he can get.
