will not do : one-third as much a
day as an American workman, and
.in every case they seem to do
their work in the hardest of ways.
The methods of labor in Japan
'are the direct opposite of those iu
America. - The carpenters, for in ■
stance, pull their planes the other
way, and when they iise tlie draw -
iug knife they push it from them
instead of pulliiig it toward them.
They do most of their work sitting,
and they do all the work on the
pull stroke instead of the push
stroke, aiid tliey staud the board

against something rather tliau lay
it on a bench or saw-horse as we
do. They do their marking, not
.with chalk, but with.a reel and an
inked string when they wish to
saw in a etright line, and tlie
whole of the work of turning tlie
rough logs into the finest of cabi
net work is done by hand.
There are no planiDg mills in
Japan, and the saw mills can be
counted on tliii fingers of one
hand. The usual mauuer of salv
ing logs into boards is to stand the
log at an angle against the sup
port and saw it by hand. The saw
used is not the powerful cross-cut
'saw of America, but a wide, short
Japanese instrument, which has a
handle about two feet long, and
which looks like a butcher’s cleaver
filed into a saw.
The human saw mill stands on
the top of the log or under it, and
pulls away for ten hours a day for
about thirty cents a day. Ski.led
Carpenters in cities get about forty
American cents a day, and the
i)e6t menriu the business do not
get over forty-five. Still, you will
find no better wbfkmefi in the
world ‘tlian here. Their work is
done with the use of very few
nails, and they have to be cabinet
makers as well as carpenters.
Every Japanese house has walls
which most move in grooves iu aud
out every day, and the ordinary
home is aa finely put together ,as a
bureau. The Joining' of every
thing is by dove-tailing, and the
Japanese could teach our Ameri
can workmen much iu the polish
ing and joining ox fine woods.
Speaking of house-building,
the Japanese begin their work of
building at the top. The roof

thorough republican.
There can be no doubt of the cor
rectness of Judge Morris’ decis
ion. Common carriers can seat
colored men or White men in any
car they (the common carriers)
may set apart. This is done daily
everywhere. If a,colored man (or
a white man) purchases a first-
class ticket, he has a right to a
first-class car. If he fails to get
it, he has his right of action. . The
roads may have separate cars for
the two- races; as has been virtual
ly decided. Indeed, some of the
states, (Florida, .among the oth
ers), have enacted statutes re
quiring it. So if the colored man
gets a first-class car, he cannot de
mand a seat-in the. car provided
for white pasieiigers exclusive-
cabinet. He
has already occupied that position,
and therefore, it adds nothing to
the public honors ho has enjoyed.
It may be that being a man of
great mental activity he simply
wants congenial employment. This
reason for seeking a cabinet place,
however, is not very generally ac
cepted. The.belief is that he is
still seeking the Presidency, and
will continue to do so until he is
successful or dies." The staying
qualities of the Presidential bee
are surprising.
