chances are that Mr. Ingalls will
lire to see his hope realized. The
growth of the pension list has been
astounding m the last few years.
Few people realize how rapidly the
appropriations on this score have
increased. These figures, showing
what pensions have cost and how
they have swelled, will surprise
many readers:

In 1862, with the 'war extending
from the Potomac to the Rio
Grande, the total cost of the army
of the union and all its expenses
were less than 8400,000,000. Now
we have the queer picture pre
sented of a pensioi# list nearly
thirty years later calling fo: one-
half the amount required to sus-,
taiu the army in the midst of war.
There are now, in round numbers,
500.000 pensioners on the rolls;
200.000 applications are pending
as a hundred hens and eats more.
We would not deride the family
