A Well Dressed Pauper,
In all large cities there Is a way of
getting rid of undesirable persons by
means of giving them a “pauper’s
pass”-to some city to -which they want
to go.
It seems that a lawyer who is quite
Well known about town and who, like
many other persons, is not averse to
traveling on a free ticket had made
several requests to a certain official for
a pass to New York. He had been re
fused a number of times, but with a
persistence worthy of a better cause he
continued to bore his official friencL
Finally he was supplied with the mag
ic pasteboard, and without looking at
It he went to the railroad station and
paid for bis scat in the parlor car.
When the conductor came along, the
lawyer, who, by the way, is a man of
rather imposing appearance, was read
ing a paper and with the nonchalance
supposed to be second nature to those
who never pay their carfare held out
his pass, never even glancing at the
conductor. That official took, the pass,
read it carefully, looked at the holder
of it and then examined the pass again
with considerable care. The lawyer,
noticing that the conductor seemed to
be giving the -pass more than ordinary
attention, stared at the official with a
manner that indicated that be might at
least be a director and asked with con
siderable warmth, “Anything the mat
ter with that pass ?”
The conductor looked at his question
er In a quizzical way and then said,
“No; the pass is ail right, but you are
certainly the best dressed pauper I
ever saw.”—Boston Transcript.
The Vanity of Men.
“Vanity, vanity, nil is vanity 1" saith
the preacher. Which is usually inter-
! preted to mean, “All women are vanl-
! ty.” In point of fact, the observant
! are agreed that there is no sex in vani
ty, more than in mind. An elevator at
tendant uot long ago glanced disgust-
‘ edly at a man who daring a long trip
• up ten or more stories occupied; the en
tire time at the mirror. ITe curied the
ends of his mustache, arranged his tie,
adjusted his hat at a more becoming
angle and was altogether so absorbed
that he.was carried beyond his destina
tion and had to walk down a flight of
stairs.
Said the elevator man to a woman in
the car: “They say that a woman can’t
go by a looking glass without looking
at herself, but as far as I can see she
ain’t in it with the men. A woman
never gets a chance to look in that
glass, for the men keep it busy all the
tune.’

Origin of Cake Walk:.
The cake walk proper had its origin
among the French negroes of Louisi
ana more than a century ago,, says the
New Orleans Times-Democrat There
is little doubt that it is an offshoot of
some of the old French country dances.
It resembles several of them in form.
From New Orleans it spread over the
entire south and thence north. It was
found of convenience to the plantation
negroes. They were not wedded by li
cense, and it was seldom that the serv
ices of a preacher were called in. At a
cake walk a man might legitimately
show his preference for a woman and
thus publicly claim her for a wife.
In effect the cake wqjk was not dif
ferent from the old Scotch marriage
which required only public acknowl
edgment from the contracting parties.
So this festival became In some sense
a wooing, an acceptance or a rejection
and a ceremony. This explains its pop
ularity with the blacks outside of its
beauties, with the accompaniment of
music, which is competent at ail times
to command negro support »;
Cake walking has improved, as do
most things that are constantly prac
ticed. It has lost its old significance
in the south. Negroes now get married
When they marry at all in the white
folks’ fashion. It has become, howev
er, a pantomime dance. Properly per
formed, it is a beautiful one. The cake
is not much of a prize, though the ne
gro has a sweet tooth.—

The Yawi.
On the west coast of Africa the na*
tives call the raspberry a yaw. It hap
pens that one of the pleasing diseases
that come out from that quarter of the
globe is characterized' by dusky red
spots that appear on the body and soon
grow' into ulcers nbout the size and
looks or the raspberry. So this disease
is called the yaws. It Is contagious
and downright disagreeable. White
sailors bring It back with them to their
own discomfort and the disgust of
those at home. Yaws prevails also In
the Fiji Islands and In Samoa, but in
these two places children mainly are
attacked, and the natives regard the
disease in the same light as civilized
persons look at measles—almost a cer
tainty to have and the sooner over
with the better.

A Discover.- by Chance.
Finiguerra, the master of early en
graving, delighted in doing deeds of
kindness. One day a washerwoman
in washing a piece of clothing in which
a needle had been carelessly left had
the misfortune to run It Into her band.
The needle broke, and more than Half
of it was left imbedded in the flesh. It
gave her much pain, and as scon as she
could she went to Finiguerra’s studio,
put down the bundle of damp clothes
that she was carrying to their owner
and asked the artist to help her. After
much patient, careful manipulation
with his fine tools he succeeded in ex
tracting the broken needle.
The woman thanked him. and as she
lifted her damp bundle to leave the
studio Finiguerra noticed that it had
rested upon one of his engravings and
had received an excellent impression
from itl The engraving, like all others
of that time, was a metal plate com
plete In itself and was regarded as a
single picture. The Impression made
upon the damp cloth suggested to the
alert mind of Finiguerra the possibility
of producing an indefinite number of
pictured from a single original. By ex
perimenting he perfected his discovery
and eventually made it possible for all
homes to have beautiful engravings,
for previous to his discovery only the
wealthy could afford them.

The forage allowance Is often com
muted by turning over the same to the
quartermaster, and this practice once
betrayed a suspicions new member of
the house into a curious blunder. He
announced that he bad discovered that
“officers of the army are selling the
forage allowed to them, and one such
case I am prepared to cite from the
records of the war department, a case
In which the oats and hay were trans
ferred, doubtless for-n consideration,
to a person named Q. M. Corral.”
. There was an exchange of looks and
winks among his astonished hearers,
and then an old member kindly rose
and said, “I presume, Mr. Speaker,
that the memorandum referred to by
my distinguished friend refers to a
transfer of forage, in the ordinary
course of business, to the quartermas

Soon after the conscript law was

Captain Slack was appointed enrolling

after his arrival my sister had occasion

the following conversation occurred:
“Mrs.. , where Is John?”
“Gone to fight for his country, child.”
“Indeed. I thought he was one of

“Lor’, honey, Cappin Slack don’t
