(Georgia in The Lead.
Augusta Herald.
Today there are 195,000 miles
of main track in the United
States as compared with 271,000
miles in all the rest of the two
continents and the islands of the
world, and statistics show that
the south leads in recent railroad
building, and that Georgia leads
all the southern states.
The New York Sun, in writing
of railroad development and its
physical and social consequences,
says:
“By the last report of the inter
state commerce commissioners,
it was shown that the three states
which stood at the head of the
list in recent railroad building,
two—Georgia and Arkansas—
were in the south, and at the
present time Georgia has more
than double the railroad mileage
of Massachusetts, and Arkansas
three times as much as Connecti
cut. Alabama has nearly half the
railrod mileage of New York, and
even North Carolina, long a lag
gard state in railroad develop
ment, has a total mileage of 50
per cent, larger than that of New
Jersey, in many parts of which
the railroads constitute almost a
net work of lines. Undoubtedly,
the great development of coal,
iron and phospate interests of the
south have had much to do with
the development of a new market
in the west for the fruit products
of the lower Mississippi valley has
been a contributing cause, too.
But the railroad growth in south
ern states is ascribable to no sin
gle cause. It is due to a better
understanding of these states and
to the improvements in railroad
building, railroad operation and
in the adjustment of the financial
problems which have become a
part of railroad business.”
Adjusting Industrial Life.
Southegn Farm Magazine of Baltimore for
October.
The adjustment of industrial
conditions in the South has not
advanced sufficiently,however, for
employers and employes to escape
entirely annoyances and hard
ships, particularly where the
white employer is concerned with
the black employe. But there
are broad stretches in the South
where there is no negro question
in industry and agriculture. To
those regions a steady stream of
thrifty white immigration is flow
ing, and that stream is even mak
ing itself felt as an influence for
good in other parts of the South
where the negroes are in greater
numbers. The discomforts aris
ing from the readjustment are not
as widespread as superficial obser
vation might lead one to imagine.
They are not too great to be
overcome in time by wisdom and
patience. Still, they are worthy
of consideration.
A Typical South African Store.
O. R. Larson, of Bay Villa,Sun
days River, Cape Colony, conducts
a store typical of South Africa, at
which can be purchased anything
from the proverbial “needle to an
anchor.” This Btore is situated
in a valley nine miles from the
nearest railway station and about
twenty-five miles from the near
town. Mr. Larson says: “I am
favored with the custom of farm
ers within a radius of thirty miles,
to many of whom I have supplied
Chamberlain’s Remedies. All tes
tify to their value in a household
where a doctor’s advice is almost
out of the question. Within one
mile of my store the population
is perhaps sixty. • Of these, with
in the last twelve months, no less
than fourteen have been absolute
ly cured by Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy. This must surely be a rec
ord,” For sale by all dealers in

The Proofreader.
In Sweden, writes an American
traveler, the saloons are closed on
Saturday—pay day—while the
saving banks are kept open until
midnight. No government can
force a man to save his money,
but at least this Swedish system
encourages them to deposit it
where it will bring better interest
than a headache.

An anonymous writer in the

says:
‘ The ideal proofreader for a
small printshop ought to be an
accomplished printer, a sensible
person, a person understanding
the scope and limitations of the
English Language, one compre

appreciation of literature, a store

and with a fund of humor suffi
cient to enable him to do his
whole duty along these various
lines without making for an early
grave If he does not really know
everything, he ought assuredly to
be able to scent out an error and
to know how to get at the truth.
If he reads the proofs for a week
ly newspaper also, he ought to
know all about local affairs and
all about the town or city in or

An elephant-catcher seems to
be needed in India on the railroad
between Bengal and Assam. As
the superintendent of the line was
making an inspection trip over it
on the night of July 17,last, while
passing through the great Nam-
iDai* forest, the train came to a
stop with a jolt that threw the
travelers out of their berths. It
had run into a heard of wild ele
phants which were trotting down
the track, the hindmost of which
had both hind legs broken and
was throwD into the ditch, while
the enginman counted seven oth
ers which got away. This was
not the first time that wild ele
phants had got on the track, and
ordinary fences and cattle-guards
are no protection.
There is nothing like Asthmaiene.
It brings instant relief, even in the
worst cases. It cures when all else
fails.
The Kev. O. F. WELLS, of Villa Ridge,
111., says: “Your trial bottle of Asthmaiene
received in good condition. I cannot tell
yon how thankful I feel for the good de
rived from it. I was a slave, chained with
putrid sore throat and Asthma for ten
years. I despaired of ever being cured. I
saw your advertisement for the cure of this
dreadful and tormenting disease, Asthma,
and thought you had overspoken your
selves, but resolved to give it a trial. To
my astonishment, the trial acted like a
charm. Send me a full size bottle.”

Gentlemen: I write this testimony from a sense of duty, having tested the
wonderful effect of your Asthmaiene, for the cure of Asthma. My wife has been
afflicted with spasmodic asthma for the past 12 years. ^Having exhausted my own
skill as well as many others, I chanced to see your sign upon your windows on
130th street, New York, I at once obtained a bottle of Asthmaiene. My wife com
menced taking it about the first of November. I very soon noticed a radical im
provement. After using one bottle her asthma has disappeared and she is entirely
free from all symptoms. I feel that I can consistently recommend the medicine to
all who are afflicted with this distressing disease. Yours respectfully,
O. D. Phelps, M. D.
Dr. Taft Bros. Medicine Co., Feb. 5,1901.
Gentlemen: I was troubled with asthma for 22 years. I have tried number
less remedies, but they have all failed. I ran across your advertisement and started
with a trial bottle. I found relief at once. I have since purchased your full-size
bottle, and I am ever grateful. I have a family of fonr children, and for six years
was unable to work. I am now in the best of ^ eal h and am doing business every
day. This testimony you can make such use of as you see fit. S. Raphael,

The price of American farm
