The |1. hostile contain ♦ Vmes the 50a, Pipe-
All Austin man who met one of
his acquaintances at lunch the
other day said, according to the
Chicago Times-Heraid:
“I saw your wife yesterday,
Parker. She looked terribly wor
ried. What’s the matter? None
of the children sick, I hope.”
Oh, no. It’s the servant girl
question. We had a girl that, by
George, didn’t seem to have any
more idea of the way things ought
to be done in a kitchen than 1 a
brindle cat has of algebra. She
would serve the coffee in the tea
-pot and set the cream in the oven
to keep it‘ from getting sour. She
would give us doughnuts that we
couldn’t eat and order the gro
cery boy to bring cookies for her
own use. As for breaking things,
heavens! We had to get a new set
of dishes every two weeks, and
one evening when I took a friend
of mine out home. to dinner we
were right in the middle of the
meal when she came in, with her
sleeves rolled up, to tell us that
she had found a mouse drowned
in the milk pitcher, Oh, she was
a lovely one 1 It didn’t do any
good to tt.ll her things, because
she kept-right on in her own way
just the same.
“Well, my wife finally gave up
and told her to go. Then we had
a streak of luck. We found an
other cook right off, and, say, I
never saw anything like her. She
can’t find enough things to do. In
addition to giving us the best
meals we ever had, she washes
the windows and scrubs the steps,
and blamed if I didn’t go home
the. other evening and found her
raking up the leaves in the yard.
She’s a wonder. That girl’s worth
$15 a week, and we get her for
four.”
“And she’s going to leave you,
is she?
“Leave? Not "that I know of.
She told my wife the other day
that she hoped she could stay
with us as long as we kept house,
because she never felt so much at
home enywhere else.”
“But what has all this to do
with Mrs. Parker’s worried look
that I spoke of?”
“That’s just it. My wife says
there must be something the mat
ter with the girl or she wouldn’t
work the way she does and stay
in at night without asking for'the
privilege of having company in
the house. Unless the girl devel
ops a disagreeable trait of some
kind before the beginning of next
week she’s to be discharged on
suspicion.”
Costly Advice,
The Children’s Friend,
You’ll have a cold this winter.
Maybe you have one now. Your
children will suffer too. For
coughs, croup, bronchitis, grip
and other winter complaints One
Minute Cough Cure never fails.
Acts promptly. It is very pleas
ant to the taste and perfectly
harmless. C. B. George, Win
chester, Ky., writes “Our little
girl was attacked with croup late
one night and was so hoarse she
could hardly speak. We gave her
a few doses of One Minute Cough
Cure. It relieved her immediately
and she went to sleep. When she
awoke next morning she had no
signs of hoarseness or croup.”

When in a certain country dis
trict a month or two ago, says a
business man. having an idle
hour, I strolled into the country
court room, where I witnessed an
amusing scene, relates Tit-Bits.
The justice, a big, pompous offi
cial, with a voice like a trombone,
took it upon himself to examine
a witness, a little, withered old
man, whose face was as red and
wrinkled as a herring. .
“What is your* name?”, asked
the justice.
“Why, squire,’’ said the aston
ished witness, “you know my
name as well as I know yourn.”
“Never you mind what I know
or what I don’t* know,” was the
caution given with magisterial
severity. “I ask the question in
my official capacity, and you’re
bound to answer it.”
With a contemptuous snort the
witness gave his name and the
questioning proceeded.
“Where do you live?”
“Wal, what next?” ejaculated
the old man. “Why,” be con
tinued, appealing to the laughing
listeners, “I’ve lived in this town
all my life, and so’s he,” point
ing to the justice, “an’ to hear
him go, on you’d think”
Silence 1” thundered the irate
magistrate. “Answer my ques
tion or I’ll fine you for contempt
of court.”
Alarmed by the threat, the
witness named his place of resi
dence and the examination went
on.
“What is your occupation?”
“Eh?”
‘iWhat do you do for a living?”
“Oh, git out, squire 1 Just as
if you don’t know that I tend
gardens in the summer season and
saw wood in the winter?”
“As a private citizen I know it,
but as the court I am uot suppos
ed to know anything about you,”
explained the perspiring justice.
“Wal, squire,” remarked the
the puzzled witne a s, “if you know
somethin’ outside the courtroom
and don’t know nothin’ in it,
you’d better get out and let some
body try this case that’s gob some
sense.”
The advice may have been good,
but it cost the witness 40 shillings.
Nature “makes all things beau
tiful in their time” Eyeiry one
of life’s seasons, when life moves
on Nature’s line, has its own
charm and beauty. Many, women
dread that period when they must
experience change of life. They
fear that face and form may suf
fer by the change, and that they
may fail to please those whom
they love. The value of Dr.
Pierce’s Favorite Prescription in
this crisis of woman’s life lies in
the fact that it assists Nature. Its
use preserves the balance and
buoyancy of the mind and sus
tains the physical powers. Many
women have expressed their grat
itude for the help and comfort
given by “Favorite Prescription”
in this trying period. Its benefits
are not passing but permanent
and conduce to mental happiness
as well as physical strength.
