It is a singular fact, recently dem
onstrated by experiments made by
French scientists, that you cannot
drown an ant. The purpose of the
experiments was to determine how
long insects would be able to resist
asphyxiation after they had been
submerged in water.

bles itself up and becomes absolute
ly inert, but upon being restored to
the air conies to life in a period
varying with the length of its im
mersion. After a ducking of six or
eight hours it requires half an hour
to come to and three-quarters of an
hour to recover when the submer
sion .has been continuous for twen
ty-four hours.
