ton county, returned home last
Friday after seving 8 years in the

Georgia Regiment, and upon re-

the stories of cruelty on the part
of the United States officers and
soldiers are partly true, but great
ly exaggerated. Mr. Smith says
his health has been better since he
left here than ever before, and he
expects to return to the Philip-

—It is true, perhaps, that the
general average of corn and cot
ton crops in Houston county is
not as good as ip other years, but
it is also a fact that the farmers
are well up with their work, and
that the expenses of cultivation
are not far above the minimum.
However j there is much good corn
and cotton, and wherever rain
has been plentiful, there are some
crops that are decidedly good.
Auxiliary crops are late, but the
energy of our farmers is without
limit, and. we dare say the final
harvest of the year will make a
good showing.
