Mrs. Julia Robinson is spending a
month with relatives in Atlanta
The Methodists here have changed
their Wednesday night prayer ser
vice into a cottage prayer meeting
and Bible study. Everybody is in
vited to attend. The meeting this
week will be held at the home of
Mrs. S. F. Crawford.
Mrs. N. L. Hesters, who had been
sick for nearly a year, and danger
ously ill during the last few weeks,
died last Friday morning. The bu
rial took place Saturday morning at
Shiloh church, Rev. T. R. McMi-
ohael conducting the funeral service.
Mrs. Hesters had been for many
years a member of the Methodist
church. She suffered much during
her illness, which was long and se
vere. Now, the tired body is free
from, pain, the weary spirit at last
at rest. Our sympathies are with
the berea\ ed family. \
The recent killing of Editor Gon
zales by Lieutenant Gov. Tillman in
Columbia, S. 0., is another terrible
result of unlawfully carrying con
cealed weapons. When Tillman was
arrested two pistols were on his per
son, having been concealed. Wheth
er or not the rank of the slayer will
prevent the infliction of the extreme
penalty of the law, is not now the
question, but that all law-abiding
people should by precept and exam
ple do all they can to break the un
lawful, inexcusable and dangerous
practioe of carrying oonoealed weap
ons. But for this pernicious prac
tice, the crime of .homicide would
be decreased by more than half.
In committing acts of war against
Venezuela, Germany is evidently ex
ercising the theory that might makes
right. It is unreasonable to assume
that Germany expeots to collect the
debts she claims by destroying valu
able property and crippling the re
sources of Venezuela. There are
many who think the undercurrent
purpose is to test the allegiance of
the United States to the Monroe
Doctrines. Recently German states
men have severely criticised the
United States with reference to
“impudence” of the Monroe Doc
trine, and Emperor William is mak
ing himself decidedly conspicuous
with “a chip on his shoulder.”

Col. Arthur Lynch, member for
Galway, Ireland, of the British par
liament, has been convicted of high
treason, and sentenced to death.
The offense consisted of his service,
as an officer,in the Boer army,he be
ing a British subject when he en
gaged in war against Great Britain.
He claimed that he was a citizen of
the Boer Republic, but he was af
terward elected to the British par
liament without any legal proceed
ing toward the change of citizen
ship. Reports from London say
that the king will most likely com
mute the sentence, or grant a par

The democrats and 28 republicans

feated, last Thursday, the Philip
pines coinage measure, which pro
vided for the coinage of a special
currency for the islands. The sub
stitute bill passed provides for the
use of the same currency in ihe
Philippines as in the United States.
This was a signal defeat of the re
