Without waiting for a specific apd
and friendly investigation, a strike
was ardered.
'Then followed a sympathetic strike
order involving all the employees of
the Bell Telephone Co. and the Wes
tern Union Telegraph Co. in the
Southeastern states.
A report printed l$st Sunday
shows a wide discrepancy in the f ig
ures given.
The President of the Western U-
nion declared the number of the
telegraph employees out are less
than 300, while strike leaders placed

EVEN in combatting evil, the de

side entirely right or entirely wrong.
Nor is cither side justified in us
ing the power of might to enforce
its contentions.
The government long ago recog
nized that there should be some legal
means of preventing,, or supressing
of utilities.
That no remedy ha3 been found,
at laust none has been enforced,
gives rise to the suspicion that the
political power alike of the labor
union, and of combined capital, op
erates us a menace to law-making
Practically every fanner should raise
and fatten pigs, for family consumption
If not for market, upon culls and sur
plus potatoes and sweet potatoes, in
order to profitably conserve a valuable
nutritive material that would other
wise be wasted. Pigs will properly
utilize many other by-products of the
farm, such as dairy by-products and
kitchen and garden wastes, as well
as grains that cannot otherwise be
profitably disposed of. I Q
We should dismiss the idea that q
profitable hog raising, belongs to the ft
corn belt only. Denmark raises no ~
corn, yet produces more pork of the
highest quality than any other equal
area in the world. The South can
produce hogs more cheaply than any
other place on earth.
Pigs produce a pound of gain from
four to five pounds of dry matter while
fattening cattle require from ten to 12
pounds. The pig yields from 76 to 80
per cent of his live weight as dressed
carcass; the steer only 65 to 66 per
cent. j
No other line of stock farming can !
so quickly be brought to profitable pro
duction with limited capital invested
In stoek and equipment as can the
making of meat from the pig. In many'
cases the grower should not only fat
ten his pigs but also slaughter them
and market the cured products, ob
taining increased profits even though
the undertaking be a small one. i

Certainly it is not just to the peo
ple at large that a vast artery of
businesss should be stopped because
a few men had been discharged from
employment. There should be a le
gal and arbitrary means of adjust
ment.
The labor union is excellent when
used for just purposes, but not when
abused, or applied in anger, resent
ment or for revenge.
This is alike applicable to organ-
izeed capital.
The government certainly has the
authority to enact a law or laws,
that will protect the general business
of the people generally against the
results of any extensive and stub
born disagreement between labor u-
nions and the managers of public
utilities..

of carbohydrates equivalent,” says
Professor Evvard of the Iowa agricul
tural college, ’
"When the pig reaches 100 pounds
in weight about one pound of protein
to five pounds of carbohydrates.
"At 160 pounds for each pound of
protein six pounds of carbohydrate.
"The fairly well-grown hog, 240 to
300 pounds, In fattening, will do well
at one pound to eight pounds of carbo
hydrates.”
