The big outstanding probleuof the sou thorn farmer (and that makes it the problem pf tiip soulhertt
businessmen, also) is the fight against.the.boll weevil. It is not enough tp say that the'problem is solv-
od by diversification. That is a fine and valuable contribution to the campaign—something that goes
far toward insuring financial independence, but it does nPt go far enough. So long as cotton is the oliief
money orop of the South it is folly to abandon cotton,

Such co-operation is a part of the prpgram of the Agricultural Department of the Central of ’ Geor*
gia Railway, which makes a study of practical agriculture and places the resulls of its investigation'at
the disposal of the farmers of its territory. ’

The Department waS organized in 191.1 and has done its part in meeting tho changed conditiqps
that have arisen since that time. It has established test farms for the trial of the methods advocated by
agricultural colleges; it has assisted Boys Clubs for crop growing and stock raising; it has distributed
pure-bred sires, cattle and swine, throughout its territory; it has sown how tobacco and other money cropd
may be grown to bridge over the lean years.whilo the farmer is learning to live with the weevil; it hgat
conducted Farm Tours through the West; aided in the construction of correctly designed storage houses
for sweet potatoes, and is now promoting tost pastures to show that permanent pasturage is possible and
will result in lessened prodnetion-ebst of beef, milk and pork. ;

tended these efforts to our friends, the farmers in the different commumitios, who have extended suck
fine co-operation and who have always been ready to give a fair trial to the suggestions that have been
made. There is an apparent realization of the inter dependence between agriculture and transportation,
