FARM PROBLEMS OF UNITED STAIRS
Every year makes the forest
problem of the United States
more clear, says Col. William B.
Greeljr, Chief of the Forest Service
United States Department of Ggri-
culture. The problem has two main
features. The first feature is the
rising cost of timber products,
which is due primarily to heavier
transportation charges ' from more
and more distant sources ef sup
ply. The second feature is the., un
productive conditions of immense
areas of land which are not adipt-
ed to agriculture.
The Nation’s lumber shipment
in J920 was about 2,070,000 car
loads, and the average haul for.
each carload 485 miles. According
to the best estimate of the .Forest
Svrvice,, United States Depart
ment of Agriculture, the freight
bill on lumber for that-year was
$275,000,000. A fraction of this
sum, says the Forest Service, wise
ly invested each year in forest pro
tection and rehabilitation woujd
grow timber where it is needed,
reduce the Nation’s freight bill,
cheapen lumber, and release vast
amounts of railroad equipment
and labor for unavoidable trans
port. Coal and . iron can not
be grown, but timber can be.—
