Atlanta.—E. C. Stigall, ex-chief of
the city vice squad, charged with the
slaying of ,W. H. Hames, private de
tective, August 17, was sentenced to
serve not less than 15 years and not
more than 16 years in the state peni

charge of voluntary manslaughter by
|a jury of the Fulton superior court,
j Stigall shot and fatally wounded W.
H. Hames on the evening of August
17 and has been on trial for several
flays before Judge John D. Humphries.
Counsel for defense indicated that a
new. trial would be asked, but refused
to divulge the nature of the grounds
on which it would be based. Stigall
was repres'ented by Attorneys William
Schley Howard and J. A. Branch.
Stigall received the verdict with no
outward signs of emotion. He arose
quiqkly when he was ordered to stand
to receive his sentence and stood
rigidly a3 Judge Humphries repeated
it. Mrs. Stigall sat huddled in the
arms of Mrs. T. C. Moseley, who has
been with her every hour of the trial.
Just before Stigall left the court room
fob the Fulton tower, Mrs. Stigall
threw her arms about his neck and
kissed him. Stigall, with his head
bowed, walked quickly opt of the
room with deputies seemingly to es
cape the eyes of curious spectators.
