CHURCH NEWS
METHODIST
REV. DENNIS' SERMON
In a Bible study of Matthew
21-11 at the morning service last
Sunday morning Mr. Dennis said
in part: "It is an offense to all
propriety for any man to eulogize
the character or the teachings of
the mau that was oalled Jesus. It
would be like eulogizing the sun
shiuing iu the heavens.
But there is no sort of doubt
that out of his teachings mueh
that is called religion has grown
that is widely dissimilar from what
He taught. We will not, this
morning, eriticize, nor even men
tion these errors of faith more
than simply to say that any creed
or doctrine that is held by religous
men that tends to separate rather
than unite them, is by no rneaus
according to his teaching.
Jesus of Nazareth gave only
four great sermons. The rest of
his teachings were in the form of
conversations.
The firsfc of these four great
sermons was at Nuzarath and out
lines most clearly the mission and
interest of his life as well as show
ing the content of his character:
"The spirit of the Lord is upon
me, because he hath appointed me
to preach the gospel to the poor;
he hath sent me to heal the brok
enhearted to preach deliverance to
the captives, and recovering of
sight to the blind, to set at liberty
them that are bruised, etc." This
scripture, he said was fulfilled in
Him.
Then that was his message:
1 have come te make this a
happier world. In the second
sermon he tells the secret of
happiness: The sermon on the
Mount, character. The third is a
series of parables showing that the
making of character is a matter of
time and faith and patience.
The fourth was about the secret
power of God working in men,
men working with and for one
another and Ged working for all.
The summary then of the teach
ings of Jesus is this:
"I am here to make men and
women happier; the secret of
happiness is character. Character
in men and women is a matter of
growth, and the making of charac
ter depends en getting into and
keeping in right relations both
with God and men."
