THE OLD TIMER ** .
N-
From Mrs. Buck Driggers.
Tavares, Florida: Back in the
good old days when I was a
small child, die memories are
still with me. Mama rocking
in her rocking chair, making
quilts to help us keep warm.
The bread she baked, he
black walnut cookies made
from walnuts from the tree in
the yard. The butter she
churned by hand and the head
cheese dad made from the head
of the hog he butchered, ne
hot bricks mama used to put
in our bed to warm it before
we went to bed; how she used
to cut up onions, fry them, and
put them in a cloth pla ed
around my chest as hot as .
could stand it when I had a
cold. The picture show dad
took us to see on Sunday after
noons the continuing movie
of Pearl White. How excited we
were to see what would happer
next Sunday.
I remember threshing tune
and the cooking and baking
mama would do. I remem ■
the one-room schoolhouse and
the wood heating stove, the
■■outside toilets, a wash bowl ol
cold water to wash our hand
before opening our lunct
boxes, the hayrides dad took
me and the neighbor kids eac
Halowe’en . . ; and I could g 1
on and on.
