Can You Follow
Animal Tracks!
BY DAVE ALMAND
Extension Wildlife Specialist
Whether you like to trap, hunt,
fish or just like the outdoors and
its creatures, knowledge of ani
mal tracks will add vastly to
your storehouse of understanding
about nature. Certainly fewer ac
tivities can compare in fascina
tion to that of tracing the routes
and habits of wildlife by means
of tracks.
Tracks are often the only evi
dence of the presence of wild
animals. Thus, tracks can pro
vide considerable information a
bout their abundance, range and
habits. This is particularly true
since many of our animals are
most active during twilight hours
or at night. This is the main rea
son we do not see more of them.
Tracks, therefore, become a
record of their activities. By
closely studying these tracks,
we can become acquainted with
an animal and its habits without
ever having seen it.
Most people associate snow
with animal tracks since fresh
snow reveals the dramatic story
of animal life so quickly and
obviously. However, snow is not
the best medium for study even
though tracking is made so easy.
Snow melts quickly and soon
loses its depth and structure.
Drifting flurries also erase ani
mal tracks. They soon become
only vague impressions in the
snow.
The'best medium for footprint
i study is soft mud or fresh moist
• sand. Mud holds shape well. So
does fine, wet sand. Look first

for animal signs in these areas.
Give yourself that much of an
advantage.
A mudbank near a stream is
one of the richest and most re
warding places to look for animal
signs. Here the raccoon makes
his nightly haunts. Also, the
mink prowls along the edges, the
muskrat drags his tail after plant
tubers, and waterfowl and shore
birds waddle at will. The otter
also puts in an occasional ap
pearance. In the wooded bottom
land areas, we can often find
signs of the busy beaver. All
leave distinctive signs—tracks—
that are very easily identified.
After a rain, a good place to
look for animal tracks is around
sand bars, washed sandy places
from fields, ditches and gully
washes. Here you may find any
kind of tracks from a dog to an
opossom.
