Houston Countions Spend Less u
For Public Services Than Rest Os Nation
Education is the most costly item of
local government in Houston County, but
there are sizable expenditures in the
county for other public services.
These include money sjx'nt for such
services as roads and highways, police
protection, health, public welfare, sew
erage, water supply and general adminis
tration and maintenance, among other
services.
According to the latest figures, based
on date compiled by the government, the
annual cost of such services amounts to
*97.41 per person in Houston County.

Held At Grand Opera House

Macon, on Saturday evening.

The Houston County per capita spen
ding average is well below the U. S.
average but not much lower than the
Georgia average of individual spending
for public services. The national aver
age is $152.22 and the Georgia average
from other communities amounted to
$112.32.
The data is based upon a recent sur
vey by the Department of Commerce. The
results of the survey are contained in a
voluminous report, the first of its kind
since 1902, entitled Compendium of
Government Finances.

dress for the “Music Man”
numbers to match authenti
cally with period of time
and so that no costume in
the production is alike.
Sets for the second act
of Coppelia were built by
Mrs. Jimmy Jones and the
Perry High School drama
dept. Other sets, scenery
and backdrops were obtain
ed through Macon friends of
the Dance Academy here.
There will be no admission
charge and the directors of
Dance Academy are inviting
everyone to attend their
production at the Grand Op
era House in Macon on
May 30.

type ol service varies considerably from
community to community.
In most local budgets, a big item is
the cost of highway facilities, including
roads, city streets, bridges and the like.
In Houston County it amounted to $14.92
per capita in the year. The average, in
other localities across the country, was
$23.05.
In the smaller counties, 10,000 or less
in population, the average was $40.11
per capita. Ihe cost was lower in the
larger counties, dropping the $21.35 in
