Social Security
Questions and Answers
Many Perry residents
received social security
benefits in 1971 even though
they earned over SI6BO. All of
these people must file an
annual report of their ear
nings with social security
before April 15,1972. Even if
you just received one check,
and are no longer receiving
checks, an annual report is
required. If you need
assistance in completing
your annual report, call the
Macon Social Security office
at 743-0381.

retire?
A. Possibly. If you earn
enough to increase the
average earnings used to
figure your retirement
payment, your cash
payments could increase.
Any increase would be
figured automatically in the
year following the year of
additional earnings, and the
increase would be
retroactive to the first of the
year following the year in
which the earnings occurred.
Q. I am receiving monthly
disability payments from
social security. If I continue
to get disability benefits for 5
or 6 years before I recover
and return to work, would
my retirement payments at
65 be less because I was
disabled and unable to work?
A.N., Perry
A. No. your retirement
benefits would not be
reduced because you were
disabled. Furthermore, the
years while you were
disabled will not be used in
figuring your retirement
benefits later. This gives you
the advantage of retaining a
high yearly average of
earnings.
Q- I am enrolled in both
parts of Medicare and I need
new dentures. Will Medicare
pay for them?
V. 0., Perry
A. No, Medicare does not
cover such items as den
tures, hearing aids, or eye
glasses.
Q. I recently had an
operation and needed two
pints of whole blood. I
thought Medicare took care
of all my bills after the first
S6B, but the hospital told me I
have to pay for the blood. Is
this right?
L.R., Perry
A. Yes, the cost of the first
three pints of blood received
in each benefit period in a
hospital is not covered by
Medicare. Most blood
programs, however, have
provisions whereby they do
not charge for blood if
replaced by someone in the
name of the recipient.
Q. My 18-year old son has
been getting monthly social
security checks since his
father died, He is going to get
a job for the summer
vacation this year. Will he
stop getting his monthly
benefit checks when he
starts working?
S.C., Perry
A. It depends on his ear
nings for the whole year. A
student can continue to get
benefits for all months in a
year in which he earns $1,680
or less for the year in wages
or self-employment. If he
exceeds $1,680 then $1 in
benefits is withheld for every
$2 of earnings up to $2,880.
Above $2,880, an additional
$1 in benefits is withheld for
every $1 earned. Regardless
of how much his yearly
earnings are, however, he
can still receive a benefit
payment for any month in
which he neither earns $l4O
or more nor performs
substantial services in self
employment.
If your son figures his
summer earnings will ex
ceed $1,680, he should notify
social security as soon as
possible - even before he
starts working. Then we can
take action to stop some or
all of his monthly cash
payments for the summer
work months rather than
have him get the checks and
have to pay the money back.
