coordinate the various
research projects being
conducted by the
agricultural engineers,
entomologists, market
quality specialists, and plant
scientists now conducting
research at the station.
At the present time, there
are 15 scientists conducting
various research programs
at Byron, but it is anticipated
that the number of scientists
will increase to 25 when the
station is fully staffed. It is
anticipated that support
personnel for the station will
increase to over 50 people as
new programs become
established.
In addition to his
responsibilities as Station
Director, Dr. Kirkpatrick
will initiate virus research
studies of the peach and
other stone fruits. There has
been very little effort in the
past to determine the extent
that viruses reduce
production and affect tree
life of the stone fruits of the
Southeast. Prior to coming to
Byron in the summer of 1971,
Dr. Kirkpatrick had con
ducted stone fruit virus
research at Wenatchee,
Washington, for the last 23
years.
A native of Washington
state, Dr. Kirkpatrick
received his Bachelor of
Science degree from
Washington State Univer
sity; Master of Science
Degree from the University
of Idaho; and his Ph. D.
degree from Cornell
University.
Dr. Kirkpatrick is a
member of the Perry Lions
Club. He and Mrs. Kirk
patrick live in Perry; they
have three children, all
grown and away from home.
Dr. Malstrom is a native of
Illinois. He received his B. S.
degree from the University
of Illinois in 1956. Following
a tour of military duty with
the Air Force, he attended
the University of California
at Davis where he received
his M.S. Degree in 1964, and
his Ph. D. degree in 1970. His
research studies were on
nutritional and physiological
problems of the grape.
As Investigations Leader
at the Byron station, Dr.
Malstrom will have the
national responsibility for
conducting production
research on edible tree nuts
in the United States. Pecan
research is currently being
conducted at Brownwood,
Texas; Shreveport,
Louisiana; and Byron,
