So What’s
' new? Wk&m
By Susan Ray
The old «stablished
statement is that one who
writes, or speaks, with
authority must possess the
qualifications wherewith to
do so. Now, ! must confess,
the only thing that qualifies
me to present an opinion on
the recently published
“Silent Cry” is the fact that I
am a member of that most
egotistical of egotistical
species, homo-sapiens.
Four years ago we, the
Seniors, stepped into a
kaliedoscope of sights,
sounds, and sensations that
we had never before ex
perienced. We were called
“freshman" and those above
us looked down at us as
children. And we were: we
were children compared to
what we are today - four
years later. As we step
across the field to receive
our sheepskin we can look
back and smile and maybe
with time even laugh again
at the fun and crazy things
we did ... and just maybe the
loss of what could have been
a beautiful yearbook will not
even be remembered.
When was it that the
yearbook ceased to be in any
way a reflection of the
times? The student, sup
posedly, is the ID of the
school's personality ... the

hub of the wheel which would
otherwise have no meaning.
It is, therefore, this ID, the
STUDENT, to whom a story
of the past should be
dedicated.
On the other hand you
must admit that every
generation needs a good,
lively exception. There is
such an obvious need for new
forms capable of sucessfully
capturing today’s reality.
Wouldn’t it be an ac
complishment if our in
dividual groups could do this
instead of becoming
preoccupied with chasing
their own tail, catching it,
and gnawing away at it. As
every one knows, this kind of
exercise carried to excess,
will stunt the school’s
growth. Sure - brand-new
ideas are hard to come by.
But I imagine that
something very peculiar is
going on. It’s as if someone
had raised the question of
what it takes to be a real
person, and the rest of us
accepted it without noticing.
And so we find an aspiration
gap. What we are as in
dividuals and groups falls
short of what we now con
sider normal.
In the past decade, Ferry
High School, has more than
doubled in enrollment, in its
number of faculty and
buildings. But along with this
quantity, we are striving for
quality. It must have quality,
it must have heart as well as
head, and it must have ideals
which are not listed in its
publications but which mean
something to its students, its
faculty and administration.
You ask, “What is a
“Silent Cry?”
I A bottomless gallery of
familiar persons: a great
building on the horizon; I
saw a profusion of studious
indivuduals, couples, and
then a surprised face. You
arrive at the conclusion that
you’ve just met a stranger
standing on the bleak
sidewalks of the city. And for
the time being the sidewalk
is just a track to get them
under some sort of electronic
guidance system. Pretty
neat - huh?
Be sure and look over the
“Silent Cry” you might
decide that it is truly an
exceptional exception or you
might consider joining the
radicals who want to picket.
