Curtis Green, who set a new County record in
the 440-yard run (56.7 secs.), won first place in
every 440 he ran this season. The Junior High
speed demon was also a link in PJHS’s record
setting mile relay team.
Perry Track Teams Meet
In County Wide Event
The age 10-14 group met on
this past Sat. afternoon, in
Warner Robins, for a six
team County wide meet. This
meet was part of the Houston
County Recreation Dept.
Program It was combined
for boys and girls
Perry’s ten year olds were
unable to participate in the
meet due to prior com
mittments by those athletes
One rule made for the
older group was that there
would be no heat winners,
other than to determine who
would be in the finals
This meant no matter how
many heats, in any given
event, the boys with the six
best distances or times
would be in one race for the
paints and ribbons These six
finalists competed to see who
would be 14-3 in order for
them to advance to District
level
In the trial runs for 11 year
olds Lynn Smith was second
in the second heat of the 220
yard run and Carl Walker
was a strong fourth in the
third heat of the 220 Both
Lynn and Carl being in the
top six times were selected
for the finals. Lynn ran the 75
yard dash and the 220 run in
the finals but did not place
just barely finishing 4th in
each. They ran better than
ever but the competition was
tough Lynn has unproved
right along for Perry but had
to compete against last
year's State champ Carl
was 6th in the 220 Although
neither Perry boy placed
nor earned a ribbon they
gave a good account of
themselves. Lynn and Carl
met their challenges with
dignity and were good
sportsmen in defeat. They
enjoyed a good overall
season.
In the trial runs for the 12
year olds Bernard
was first in the first heat of
the 220 and second in the first
heat of the 75 yard dash.
Leon Green was second in
the 220, second heat and
third in the second heat of
the 75 yard dash This was a
tremendous effort by our
boys in these events as some
of the 12 year olds are f-a-s-t!
Relays were run with no
distinction as to trial or
final and Perry look a second
place, scoring 5 points in the
440. Running in this order
were Grady Vance. William
Hill, lieon Green * anchor)
and led off by Bernard
Ixisseler Each boy was
awarded a red ribbon for his
part in the relay Bernard
Ijisseter did his best in the
final of the 75 and 220 but was
worn out by then He was 4th
and sth respectively,
Roadrunner Leon placed
third in the 75 good for 4
points and a white ribbon
and was second in the 220.
good for 5 points and a red
ribbon Perry 12‘s placed
third in the meet with 14
points l>eon and the relay
team of Bernard. Grady.
William and Leon will be in
the District meet, as Perry 's
contribution, representing
Houston County.
Perry 14 year olds were
represented by Cornelius
Nance and Alfred Dixon
There were no trial or final
heats period Cornelius was
third in both the 100 yard
dash and the Broad jump. He
earned 4 points in each as
well as a white ribbon for
each. Cornelius will go to the
District meet also. Alfred
was a strong 4th in the 440
run and participated in the
Broad jump but did not place
in either event.

Nine Year Old's
Win Second Place
Our nine year old's
provided an amazing per
formance for fans at the
Houston County Rec. Dept,
track meet, held this past
Sat., April 29th in Warner
Robins These fleet footed
runners turned in a spec
tacular effort that earned
them 39 points which was
good for a second place in a
field of six teams This
brings the total number
ofpoints, for our nine year
olds in 4 meets, to 173. We
feel this is particularly
significant because there
were only four Perry boys in
this age group. For the rules
under which this particular
meet was held and the
names of the other teams
competing, see the article
elsewhere on this sports
page dealing with the 8 year
old track results. These
strict rules enforcement had
a serious impact on this
team. For one example,
Tony Harris would normally
pick up a first place in the
Softball tlirow but he was
held out and put in the
dashes instead.
Tony won first place in
both the 50 and 100 yard
dashes, first heats. He had
times of 7.6 and 14.5
respectively. Tony’s time in
the 100 tied Eric’s time
which was the best time of
the meet.
Eric won first place in both
the 50 and 100 yard dashes,
second heats. He had times
of 7.5 and 14.5 respectively
Scott Hedrick ran better
than ever before among
stiffer compeUUon. He was
fourth in the second heats of
the 50 and 100 yard dashes
but there was only an
eyelash victory over Scott by
the number 2and 3 men.
Kent Hill placed third in the
Softball throw with a toss of
107.8 ft. He lias always done
well in this event and is a
quiet but hardworking lad.
Kent turned in a Broad Jump
good for lift, and 4th place
A near miss!
In the 440 relay. Kent-
Scott-Eric -Tony were
beautiful as they sped to a
first place win in 1.06. This
assured every boy a ribbon
in this big County meet and
they were thrilled. Ribbons
were blue for first, red for
second and white for thud.
Tony Harris and Eric
Thomas both took 2 in
dividual blue ribbons as they
scored 14 points each - the
maximum Kent’s 4 points
for a third place earned him
a white ribbon. Tony. Eric.
Kent and Scott Hedrick all
received a blue ribbon each
for their winning relay worth
7 points to the team
The Panthers scored 1 in
the first, 5 in the second, 2 in
the fifth and 1 in the sixth.
Northside had previously
beaten Perry in their first
meeting by a score of 6-4.
Elijah King was the
winning pitcher for Perry
going the whole distance.
King also opened up the
game with a 3-2 count

International City Stadium in Warner Robins.

finishes in the four-way track meet held Thur

Harris Wins Berth
In Dist. Competition
On Sat., April 29th. at the
six team Houston County
Rec. Dept, track meet Jada
Harris carved a small niche
for herself and Perry in local
track circles. Among the
best ten year old competition
in Middle Georgia she
earned her way into the
District competition this
Sat., May 6th in Warner
Robins. She is the only Perry
girl earning this honor and
responsibility. Jada has been
a consistently high per
former in all three previous 4
team meets.
Although no girl was to be
allowed to enter more than
two events and one relay the
meet officials were more
than fair to Perry in the age 8
and under girls group In
that Perry only had 2 girls
this age entered in the meet,
therefore unable to have a
relay team, the officials
decided to allow these girls
to enter three single events
This being THE big meet of
the year the girls placing
first, second or third were
given blue, red or white
ribbons respectively.
Pamela Walker and Alnita
Lasseter were terrific as
they had been all year
Pamela led her teammate as
she won a first place in the
Softball throw with a mark of
76 ft She added to her honors
with a second place in the SO
yard dash, second heat and
placed third in the first heat
of the 100 yard dash Pamela
scored 17 points as she won a
blue, a red and a white rib
bon Alnita did her part by
home run. King's record now
stands 3 wins against 2
losses.
Other leaders at the plate
were Ash 1-3; Brown 2-4;
Wright 1-3; Willard 2-4;
Carswell 2-4; and Bramlett
2-2.
The Panthers now have 3
wins and 2 losses for the
season.
taking second in the 50 yard
dash, first heat, third in the
100 yard dash, second heat
and finally being for third in
the High Jump. Alnita
scored 10 points and won 2
red and one white ribbon
With ribbons between them
they were thrilled and so was
their coach La Verne Harris
In the ten year olds they
ran trial heats which only
served to establish the six
fastest times, those being in
the finals for points and
ribbons In the trials Jada
Harris placed second in the
50 yard dash and she was
first in the 100 yard dash
Also in the trials Myrbce
Walker took a second place
in the 50 yard dash and was
third in the 100 yard dash.
Sharon Williams helped her
buddies out by capturing
third in the 50 yard dash
trials By the finals it was
evident some girls left their
best effort in the trail heats
but not Perry’s Jada as she
placed second in both the 50
and 100 yard dashes. Not
only did she win two red
ribbons, of which she is
proud, but will now
represent our area in the
District meet, a singular
honor, She was the only
Pern gal to achieve that
level.
Camille Sumner, age 11
and 12. along with Loretta
Lasseter. age 13-14 were both
in the 100 yard dash and
Broad jump. They both gave
100 percent but couldn’t dent
the scoreboard.

Perry Nabs Third In Huge
Rec. Department Track Meet
On Sat., April 29th, the
entire Houston County Rec.
Dept, boys and girls track
teams met in a huge six team
extravaganza. Teams were
the Colts, Raiders, Rams,
Rebels and Westside
Wildcats of Warner Robins
plus the Perry kids.
Heretofore the previous
meets were only 4 team
affairs. Due to the large
number of participants each
team was restricted to en
tering three athletes in each
running event and four in
each field event. The main
catch was that each boy
could only be in two in
dividual events plus one
relay. While the same rule
applied for every team it
tended to favor the large
teams who had a number of
boys nearly equal in talent.
Perry, as an example, had to
give away sure points in the
Broad and High jumps.
Steve Harris has always
gotten points in those events
but he was known to be even
a better runner so the coach
decided to sacrifice a
possible 9 to 12 points
shooting for and taking 14
points instead. Its a shame
Steve couldn’t do his thing as
in the previous three smaller
meets. In the eight year olds
Steve is Perry’s best all
around performer and in the
opinion of this writer one of
the top three in the County.
Steve was able to earn 14
points, of his teams 30 points,
to help Perry place third in
this County wide meet. He
ran the 50 yard dash (second
heat), winning first place in
7.9. This was the fastest time
Perry Track Phenoms Continue
Winning Ways In WR Meeting
Perry’s nine year old track
team, in the Houston County
Recreation Dept. League,
has yet to taste defeat as
they have left nine op
ponents, in three separate
meets, eating their dust.
Their latest exploit was a
meet held in Warner Robins
on April 27th. This excellent
group is composed of Tony
Harris, Eric Thomas, Scott
Hedrick and Kent Hill.
Coach Larry Hedrick is the
moving force for these boys
and is extremely proud of
them. Boys have to score
points by placing first,
second or third. The nine
year olds have done this in
excellent fashion as they
made 49 points in this meet.
Tony Harris led with 18
points with two first and one
third place finish. Eric
Thomas was next with 14
points for two first place
wins. Scott Hedrick added 8
points as he placed third in
each of two events. Kent Hill
contributed 4 points based on
a third place spot. These
same four boys placed
second in the 440 yard relay.
In the age 8 and under
group Steve Harris had
another super meet as he
scored an individual 224
points, the best single per
formance by a Perry boy in
this meet, regardless of age.
Steve took a first place win in
the first heats of the 50 and
100 yard dashes with times of
8.0 and 15.0 seconds
respectively. He tied for
second place in the Broad
Jump and took a third place
in the High Jump. Steve ran
the anchor leg of his teams
440 yard relay. Kenny Payne
gave the best performance of
his meet career by scoring 16
points, 4th best by any age
Pern boy m this meet. His
finest moment was in the
Softball throw, an event he
has won in two previous
meets. This time the com
petition was harder and it
served to push Kenny to a
fabulous throw of 1094 ft. to
win first place over 13 other
boys. Congratulations to
Kenny for a third straight
PERRY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MAY 4, 1172
of this meet. Steve won
another first in the second
heat of the 100 yard dash in
15.0 which was the second
best time in the meet. He
was the front runner in both
races from gun to tape. Steve
anchored his 440 yard relay
team by passing other an
chor runners to take a third
place for his team. The relay
team earned 4 points for this
effort.
Perry also probably
missed points by bolding
Kenny Payne out of the 100
yard dash but had no choice.
Kenny was just fantastic as
he won the Softball throw for
the 4th consecutive meet. He
beat out 19 other boys. His
winning effort was ft.
Kenny was second in the
second heat of the 50 yard
dash. He ran the first leg of
the 440 relay and did a good
job. He scored 12 personal
points.
The relay team of Kenny

win in this event. He also
placed second in the
secondheat of the 50 yard
dash and third in the 100 yard
dash, second heat. Kenny
ran the first leg of the 440
relay. Whitt Smith tossed the
longest Softball throw all
year - an 80 ft. job. - but this
fell short of placing in the
event even though it was
near the scoring distances.
Whitt also made a good
showing in the High Jump.
Joe Thomas gave an iron
man performance working
in the 50 and 100 yard dashes,
Broad & High jumps and
running third leg in the 440
relay. Fred Dooley gave an
all out effort in the 100 yard
dash and Broad jump.
Hervia Ingram Jr threw the
Softball well and he was in
the Broad jump. Al Casey
ran the 50 yard dash and the
second leg of the 440 relay on
a sore foot giving it all he
had. These little Mites placed
second as a team scoring
384 points (their best ever).
Steve Harris and Kenny
Payne did all the scoring.
The nine year olds saw
Tony Harris win a first heat,
50 yard dash in 7.5. He was
first with a Softball throw of
118.8 ft., took a third place in
the 100 yard dash, first heat,
Tony ran the anchor leg of
the 440 relay to gain a second
place for his team. Eric
Thomas tied for first place of
the 100 yard dash, second
heat, in 14.5 He also won the
50 yard dash, second heat, in
7.5. Eric ran the third leg of
the 440 relay. Scott Hedrick
placed third in the 50 and 100
yard dashes, second heats
and he ran the second leg of
his teams 440 relay. Scott is a
hard worker and has im
proved with each meet Kent
Hill placed third in the
Softball throw. He ran the
first leg of the 440 relay.
The ten year olds were led
by Tony Vance with a third
place finish in the 100 yard
dash. Tony earned his teams
only points. Keith Beckham
was so close to scaring with
several fourth place's.
Lynn Smith and Carl
Payne, Hervia Ingrain Jr,
Joe Thomas and Steve
Harris placed third which
was worth 4 team points. A1
Casey was in the 50 and 100
dashes giving his best effort
Fred Dooley went all out in
the 100 yard dash and Broad
jump. Joe Thomas was in the
50 and 100 yard dashes plus
the 440 relay. Whitt Smith
told his coach, before the
meet he would beat his best
previous effort in the Softball
throw. The prediction was
true as Whitt had a toss of
84Vfc ft., 4*6 ft. better, as he
finished about 6th out of 20
entries. Whitt gave a good
account of himself in the
High jump. Al, Fred and
Whitt didn’t earn any points
or ribbons but their coach
was as proud if they all had
taken gold medals in the
Olympics because each tried
110 percent and thats all
anyone can do.
Calhoun were presented pins
for breaking 90, Ursula Hunt,
Jean McCasland and Ruth
Tyson were awarded pins for
breaking 100. The dogfight
was won by Robbie Pope
with Lois Schroeder, Ursula
Hunt and Joan McCasland
being for second.
Buddy Henson and Guy
Stroupe are still conducting
the Ladies Clinic at 9:30 each
Tuesday. Jean Bennent
acted as secretary in the
absence of Faith Baumann.
Walker ran their best times
ever in this meet for Perry’s
eleven year olds but their
opponents times were just
better. Lynn’s best event of
the day resulted in taking a
second place in the 220 yard
run earning his teams only 5
points. Lynn and Carl en
tered the 220 and 440 yard
runs, the 75 yard dash and
both Broad and High jumps.
The ten and eleven year
old Perry teams were fourth
in their meets with 4 and 5
points respectively.
The twelve year olds won a
first place with a solid 40
points. Bernard Lasseter
had his best day on the track
as he was first in the 75 yard
dash in 10.0. He was second
in both the 220 yard run, only
a single step behind Perry’s
Leon Green, making it a 1-2
finish.
Bernard placed second in
the High jump as this was his
day of glory. Leon Green
gave strong support as he
won first place in the 220 run
in 29.6. He took a second
place in the Broad jump
Leon has been a consistently
good performer in every
meet. William Hill did his
part by adding a third place
to team points in the 75 yard
dash. The 440 relay was run
by Bernard Lasseter, Grady
Vance, William Hill and
Leon Green in that order
This team won first place in
59.5 as anchor man Green
was far in front at the tape
Perry won ten first place
spots being their previous
high. Steve Harris, Tony
Harris & Eric Thomas had 2
first place wins each. Ber
nard Lasseter, Kenn>
Payne, Leon Green and the
12 year old relay team had
one first place win apiece
While twelve different doys
contributed points totalling
1364 the following six were
the best:
Steve Harris 8, 224 points.
Tony Harris 9, 18 P oirits .
Bernard Lasseter 12. '
points, Kenny Payne 8, l
points. Eric Thomas 9.
points. Leon Green 12-
