good memory, but I find total
recall an almost intolerable
burden. About some in
cidents I draw blanks so all
inclusive that when told of
them I brood about where
ray mind was when I was so
physically there. About
others my memory is so
clear that when something
alarms me into remem
berence of them they are
wholly relived, with not one
touch of joy or anguish
watered-down by time. One
thing about which my head is
invariably precise, and
pleased by the reminder, is a
very special friend who I was
fortunate enough to gain this
summer.
This particular person is
really remarkable for the
way she manages it. No
excuses, no cover-ups, no
attempt to dignify her life
style for anything more than
it is. She simply is wearing
the contemporary look. You
can spot it in her in a
remarkably short time. She
figures out, what you want
and how she can adapt to
that. Then she applies
herself to your needs and
when she's finished taking in
a little here and letting out a
little there she fits you like a
glove.
One point is clear: She
appears to be an individual
who has embraced almost
every choice. She insists on a
job (in a sea of egg cartons),
rushes home and starts on
something that requires
concentration but is thought
worlds away from anything
that worries her. This super
young naturalist and her
husband do all the
housework, because it’s
demeaning to hire or expect
another woman to do what
you won’t do yourself. She
even clings to the idea of
herself as a political activist
and still says “Right on” a
lot. Weekends arrive: She
and her husband, strap on
helmets, and head for a little
excitement. The Relation
ship? They work constantly
at it, with techniques
designed for making a good
marriage better.
It’s a good thing - meeting
a friend who is quite sure
who she is. Sometimes you
happen into a friendship that
has a few genuinely good
things in it, you get a whiff of
what people could be and you
demand more the next time.
Sometimes you need a good
mental shake from someone
with a great deal of per
sonality and who will help
you realize potentials within
yourself. Yet, there is one
word of caution: One per
son’s better can be another
person’s worse. Try it on
first. Once you make a
decision, you might as well
use your will for, instead of
against, your own best in
terests. Better is what’s
better for you.
Thanks. Rose
