Vinson Endorses Sam Nunn Candidacy
The Honorable Carl
Vinson, “Mr. Congressman”
to three generations of
Georgians and Americans,
has endorsed Sam Nunn for
the U. S. Senate.
“What influences me most
deeply,” Vinson declared,
“is whether a man takes a
stand and speaks up for what
he thinks is right and against
what he thinks is wrong.”
Vinson, a legendary figure
in Georgia and the nation’s
capitol, who spent 50 years in
the U.S. House of
Representatives, released
his endorsement of Nunn this
week in a personal letter.
One of the most powerful
political men this country
has produced, Vinson’s 50
years in Congress represent
a national record for
duration of service in
Washington.

Vinson wrote to Nunn, “and I
have followed your political

influence me to give a
personal endorsement to

Still vigorous at 88, Vinson
rarely steps into the political
stage, although he is a keen
observer of contemporary
politics. Statements at
tributable to the former
congressman are few and far
between. On his Baldwin
County farm which he has
tended in since his
retirement in the middle
1960’5, Vinson said further of
his endorsement of the Nunn
candidacy.

United States Senate. I have
read your position papers,
and I have heard you ar

that deeply trouble this
nation.
“I am particularly im
pressed with your avowed
aspiration to sit as a member
of the Senate Armed Service
Committee. I know, too, that
you are personally pledged
to a strong defense posture
for this nation and to the
preservation of Georgia as a
center for military bases.”
Vinson was for years
chairman of the House
Armed Services Committee,
one of the most powerful
positions in Congress.

DISCIPLINE
1. training that develops self-control, character, or efficiency. 2. the result of such
training; orderly conduct. 3. submission to authority and control. 4. a part ; ~ular system of
rules or methods, as for a monastic order. 5. treatment that corrects or punishes.
I have been a classroom teacher for the last seven years. During this time discipline in our
schools has become very lax. Both students and teachers want and need an orderly and safe
place to work and learn. The situation is getting worse, not better. Until our schools initiate
a program of training that will develop self-control, character, efficiency and orderly
conduct, they will not be able to perform their functions.
We need administrators who will judge each discipline case on its own merit considering
only the child, not based on wealth or race.
Since announcing my candidacy in March, I have tried to bring to the citizens of Houston
County, issues that face not only this county, but the rest of the state as well. Discipline is
only one area of concern.
I will dedicate my administration of your schools to solving these many problems. This
can only be done with your vote and support next Tuesday, August 8.
Sincerely,
M.A, 'A/' Jones

PERRY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUG. 3, 1972
lawyer from Houston County
in Middle Georgia, is a great
nephew of Vinson, under
whom he served as legal
counsel to the House Armed
Forces Committee in
Washington.
“In my 50 years of ser
vice,” Vinson continued, “at
the close of every conflect in
which America engaged,
there were strong pressures
to make cuts in our national
defense resources. In a
world of power politics, this
is foolish and dangerous, and
we need strong men in
Congress to withstand such
pressures.”
Earlier in the en
dorsement, Vinson said,
“Georgia voters have
traditionally held such men
in high respect, and that is
how statesmen like the late
Senator Richard Russell
have evolved.”
Vinson, near the end of the
endorsement, praised Nunn
for a “positive and mature
viewpoint,” and added: “I
only hope that the people of
Georgia will discern in you
the same fine qualities which
I believe you possess and
which are so necessary if
Georgia is to continue its
tradition of offering inspired
leadership at the very
highest levels of government
... for what it is worth, Sam,
you go with my blessing.”
Vinson tendered his “firm
personal support of your
candidacy for the United
States Senate.”
