Social securitj
beneficiaries who are under
72 in any months of this year
and who work should make
sure their earnings estimate
for 1972 are up-to-date. Any
changes in the amount you
think you will make for this
year should be reported. If
you earn less than you
originally estimated,
reporting the change may
permit additional social
security payments for the
year. On the other hand, if
you earn more money than
originally estimated, some
social security checks which
are paid may not be due and
the money will have to be
repaid at the end of the year.
Any person who earns over
$1,680 during the year is not
due a check for every month.
Q. I am a 48-year-old
widow and I have never
worked under social
security. Recently, I started
caring for three preschoolers
in my home while their
parents work. I will earn
about $2,500 this year. Should
the parents of these children
report my earnings and
pay the social security
contributions?
L.M.N., Perry
A. No., you are self
employed. If your net profit
is S4OO or more this year, you
must report this income as
self-employment and pay
your own social security
contributions.
Your contributions will
build important protection
for you if you should become
severely disabled and be
unable to work for a year or
longer. If you die
prematurely, your family
can get social security
survivors benefits. Social
security also pays monthly
retirement benefits.
Medicare protection begins
at 65. If you do not already
have a social security card,
be sure to get one right away
at any social security office.
Q. My husband died three
years ago. I will be 60 in a
few months and I want to
apply for monthly social
security widow’s payments.
Must I wait until I am 60 to
apply?
0.U., Elko
A. No. You should apply
two or three months before
you reach 60. You will need
proof of your age, proof of
