J|) THE BANK OF PERRY
Houston County and The Bank
of Perry president Lewis
Meeks urged persons in the
Perry area to help get the
penny back into circulation.
The Perry bankers said

missioner Cullen Talton, who
resigned his Commission Post
One to make a successful bid
for the Houston Sheriff’s job.
Carter announced earlier
this spring that he would run
in the Democratic primary,
after being elected in 1973 as
an “independent”. He had run
unsuccessfully twice before as
a Republican.
Born in Macon, Carter
moved to Houston County in
1947. He is a graduate of Perry
High School and attended the
County Hospital Authority.
McConnell is 58 and a native
of Comer, Georgia. He was a
school board member in 1966
also, being nabbed to fill an
unexpired term at that time.
McConnell moved to Houston
County in 1947 and recently
retired after 34 years as a civil
service employee in Warner
Robins Air Logistics Center.
Before coming to Houston
County, McConnell was a
coach and the principal of
Comer High School.
McConnell graduated with
an education degree at the
University of Georgia.
Another appointed position,
for 17 years, held by Mc-
Connell is as a member of the
Warner Robins recreation
board. McConnell has run for
the school board once
previously.
McConnell and his wife,
Cammie Sue, reside at 252
Peachtree Circle. They have
two sons, L.A. McConnell, Jr.,
and Wayne.
hoarders of pennies have
caused a shortage of the coins
throughout the country. They
also noted the price of copper
has dropped and that the 62

years. He served two years in
the United States Army.
Carter owns and operates
the Carter Insurance Agency
in Warner Robins. He and his
wife, Barbara, reside with
their two children in Cen
terville. They have two
children, Chuck 17, and Vickie
15.
Carter said Tuesday af
ternoon that he felt that he had
served all parts of Houston
County in his two years as a
member of the five man
board. He stated, “I am not a
member of the establishment
and so am obligated only to
the voters. I realize that all of
Houston County needs
representation and will
continue to do my utmost to be
of service if re-elected.”
Carter is now opposed by
two Warner Robins residents,
a housewife named Mrs. Joy
Land, and by Police Chief
Rape.
W.H. “Pip” Rape, a 62 year
old veteran Houston County
politician, announced Tuesday
morning that he would run for
Houston County Commission
Post One in August 13’s
Democratic primary. Warner
Robins Mayor Ed Bryant has
agreed to give Rape a 30-day
leave of absence to campaign
for the Commission post. If
elected, Rape will be required
to resign his Police Chief's
position.
Rape is currently scheduled
to retire as Police Chief in
May, 1975. Assistant chief Joe
Don Norwood will take
command of the city police
force during Rape’s cam
paign.
Rape has previously served
on the Board of Com
missioners for two four year
terms, from 1957-1961 and
from 1961-1964. He also served
four years on the Warner
Robins City Council, from 1953
through 1956.
Qualifying deadline for the
August 13 primary is Wed
nesday, June 12. Another
County Commissioner, Steve
Byrd is thus far unopposed in
his bid for re-election, but
rumors still persist that a
south Houston resident will
oppose him.

Meeks and Stubbs said, "It
is estimated that over 30
billion pennies are in cir
culation, doing the job for
which they were intended.
Somewhere in this vast
country of ours, however, in
excess of 30 billion pennies are
in hiding. These are the
pennies we are looking for.
They are in dresser drawers,
show boxes, pickle jars and
most any place you can think
of that will get them out of
pocket and out of sight. They
are unwanted, unused and
unappreciated,” the Perry
bankers said.
If the hoarders of pennies do
not return the coins into cir
culation, the local bankers
pointed out, the production of
just one billion new pennies by
the government will cost the
taxpayers $10,000,000.
The U S. Treasury Dept., in
cooperation with banks, will
issue a special certificate to
individuals who cash in $25 or
more in pennies at their local
bank. In the meantime, the
local banks are urging anyone
who has pennies stored to cash
them in right away to help
ease the critical shortage.
