Six different areas of the
state - Northeast, Northwest,
Southeast, Southwest, Middle

‘B’ Astros Stay First
With Win Over Lions
This past Saturday in
Centerville, on a rain marred
field, the Perry B Astros
maintained a firm hold on first

Lions went to defeat by a 15-4
count to leave the Perryans
with the only unmarred record
in the 13 team County B loop.

The Perry “A” league
Astros, sponsored by Grant

opponents 43-1, bringing their
league record to 7 wins and 0
losses. Archie Sanders was the
winning pitcher June 4,
against the RAFB Braves,
Archie struck out 10, walked 1,

Eddie Porter was the

Great defensive ball handling
by the Astros prevented the

Goshen Plantation in Augusta
(Northeast); Glen Arvin
Country Club in Thomasville
(Southwest); Tifton Country

Four players from each
group in each section will
qualify through a point system
for the final championship to
be held at the spacious HLCC
course on August 5. HLCC Golf
Pro M. L. Langston said that
Executive Director of the
Georgia State Amateur Golf
Association, Floyd Doss of
Perry, was in charge of the
summer-long tourney.
Each club in the G.S.A.G.A.
has entry blanks available for
golfers in the designated age
ranges to sign up. Both HLCC
commence at 8:00 A.M.
Sunday morning when the
first group tees off. There will
be four flights: championship
flight, one, two and three
flights.
One oddity concerning the
annual PCC tournament is
that a Perry duo has never
captured the title. Last year a
pair of locals, A1 Lasseter and
David Hathaway, came close,
finishing second behind
Griffin’s Chip Clouse and
Robert Weaton, The only two

Jeff Allen had 5 hits for 7 trips,

June 24. Houston’s Lake’s
qualifying will be on Monday,
July 22.
Trophies will be awarded to
the first four (4) players in
each age group. Entry fee is
$3.00. Executive director
Floyd Doss said that he ex
pected over 2,000 kids to play
in the tournaments this
summer. A golfer may play in
each, or in all, of the four
tournaments in his section. In
the Middle Georgia section
there are four tournaments,
the one held Monday at Idle
Hour, on June 24 at PCC, on
July 1 at Green Island C.C. in
Columbus, and on July 22 at

Last year’s tournament was
played under perfect weather
conditions and more of the
same is expected Sunday.
“Sunday is Father’s Day
and we expect the fathers to
have a good time,” Wiltz
commented. “Maybe we can
get a pair of winners out of
Perry this year.”

Starting pitcher Whitt Smith
went 4 strong innings allowing
only 2 singles, 3 walks and 8
strikeouts and got his third
win of the year to go 3-0. Smith
was pulled to save him for two
innings of work later in the
week. Little 9 year old Rodney
Bridges, on the mound his first
time, was a tough reliever
giving 2 hits (one an infield
job), walked one and fanned 2,
Cedric Mickels played well for
the Astros. Defensively Mike
Griggs made a nice running
one hand catch in LF. Catcher
R. Mickels played out
standingly with hustle and a
gun throwing arm. Hammock
and Brunson had a couple of
defensive gems.

With two outs Rodney Bridges
singled, moved to 3d on hustle
and with alert baserunning
stole home being safe on an
eyelash call. The Braves got
back a couple in the first.
After a scoreless 2d the
Astros struck for 6 in the 3d.
Duncan was hit in the back,
stole 2d and eventually home
as he continues to show speed
and agressive base running
game after game. Hammock
singled, Robert Brunson
walked and an RBI hit by
Bridges scored Hammock.
Anthony Honeycutt walked
then with one away David
Pannesi worked a bases
loaded RBI walk scoring
Brunson. Bridges scored on a
WP. The last two Astro runs
were scored by Honeycutt and
Pannesi as Smith rapped a 2
RBI double. In the sth Glover
drew a one out walk followed
by a Raynard Mickels single.
Duncan, a lefty, then popped
an opposite field double just
inside the LF foul line worth
an RBI as Glover scored with
courtesy runner Pannesi
moving to 3d. Hammock and
Brunson walked with Brun
son’s stroll forcing in Pannesi
with a talley. Bridges then
worked an RBI walk which
scored Duncan,
Defensively Astros Mike
Griggs and Cedric Mickels
played well. R. Mickels
playing catcher for the first
time turned in a well caught
game as he hung up a runner
and threw to Bridges at 2d for
the tagout. Mickels then
hustled on a WP and threw to
Pitcher Hammock for a close
tagout at home and finally he
gunned down a runner on a
steal attempt at 3d on which
Brunson took a hard collision
but held for the out. Hammock
earned win number 2 with a
line two hit game. He fanned
12 batters.
Cubs
Lose
First
The Home Journal junior
league Cubs rallied from an 8-
3 deficit, to tie the game in the
sixth inning, then surrendered
an unearned run in the bottom
of the seventh frame and
dropped their first game of the
season, 12-11, to the Robins
AFB Flyers Saturday af
ternoon at Moody Park.
The Cubs pitching corps
limited the Flyers to only four
hits during the contest but 15
walks spelled the coup de
grace for the Perry nine.
Shortstop Roy Hill was the
hitting star for the Cubs with
two hits (a three run triple and
a run-scoring double) and
sparkled in the field. Cubs
leading batter, Bernard
Lasseter, continued his hot
hitting with a single and
double in four trips and pulled
off an unbelievable double
play at his hot corner position
to kill a Flyer scoring threat in
the bottom of the fifth.
Curtis “Mutt” Noble pitched
five strong innings of relief for
the Cubs and rapped out a
booming two-bagger in two
official appearances. Carl
Walker cracked a double in
four trys, and first sacker
Chris Mitchell singled and
walked in two attempts.
Robert Salomon, right fielder,
walked twice and scored each
time. Jeff Roundtree, Jerry
Little and Clarence Bogan
each received a base-on-balls
and scored.
Left fielder Mike Fowler
recorded the hardest hit ball
of the afternoon, but it was
right at Flyer pitcher Robert
Lewis.
David-Alford, Leroy Alford,
Frank Lester and Jeff Jordan
also saw action for the Cubs.
Roy Hill and Curtis Noble
received a pass for a free
dinner at Hardees for their
performances against the
Flyers.
