PIGSKIN REVIEW
By
Jerry Meyer
Do you remember the
grandfather of the plastic
worm? I can remember
hanging out in a tackle
shop when I was a
teenager waiting for a
shipment of the new
miracle lures to arrive. If
you weren't on the
premises when a shipment
came in- you wouldn't be
able to buy them, because
demand greatly exceeded
supply. The wonder lure to
which I refer is the Black
Magic pork rind eel. That
piece of black hog hide
revolutionized bass
fishing.
Pork rind baits are still
produced in a variety of
colors, shapes, and sizes.
They even come in a ripple
rind version which works
on the same principle as
the curly tailed plastic
worms. The rinds vary in
size from a tiny flick which
is so small if can be at
tached to flies, up to a
giant size which can be
used to troll offshore for
salt water game fish.
Colors which are currently
being produced are red,
yellow, green, purple,
black, white, and frog
pattern.
I know one dedicated
bass fisherman who would
just as soon leave home
without his pants as his jar
of frog pattern pork rinds.
He uses this frog version
behind a weedless spinner
bait and chunks it right
into the middle of lllly pads
and weed beds. He then

retrieves it across, over
and through the thickest
weeds he can find.
Sometimes he slinks it real
slow. On other occasions
he rapidly scoots it across
the surface. Believe me, he
catches his share of
lunkers. (Probably your
share and mine too!)
When the surface water
warms and the bass move
to the cooler deep water, a
Johnson silver spoon
jigged deep with a strip of
pork rind will usually put
some fish in the boat. I
favor the black spoon and
black rind.
A few of the tiny fly
flicks attached to several
of the hooks on a top wafer
plug will often tempt a
finicky largemouth when
they are feeding in the
shallows during the early
morning and late af
ternoon.
You can ever add a
small or medium sized
strip of pork rind to a
crank bait to increase its
charm. A strip of pork rind
can effect the action of a
crank bait, so cast it near
the boat and retrieve it
several times to check the
action.
Pork rinds can also be
used to decorate trailer or
stinger hooks on spinner
baits.
Fished by themselves or
as attractors on other
lures, pig skin catches
"Hawgs". (For the more
uninformed members of
the fishing fraternity- a
"Hawg" is a real braggin'
size bass.)
