Unexpected Outdoor
Social Encounters
Summer stirs a variety
of outdoor activity.
Fishing, camping,
canoeing, and hiking will
attract large numbers of
Georgia outdoors men in
the coming months. All of
these sports provide op
portunities for unexpected
social encounters with a
poisonous snake.
Rattlesnakes, cop
perheads, water moc
casins, and coral snakes
are the only poisonous
snakes that are native to
the United States. Georgia
is one of the few states
which has all four species.
Three of the four are
known as pit vipers. Not
because they live in pits,
but because they have a
small pit on each side of
their head between their
eye and nostril. These pits
are actually heat sensory
organs which help the
reptiles locate their prey in
the dark. The organs are
sensitive enough to allow a
snake to strike at, and hit,
a warm object in total
darkness. This uncanny
ability was proven by
scientists under laboratory
conditions. The snakes
were blindfolded by
placing small strips of tape
over each eye, so it was
impossible for the snakes
to see. Then water filled
baloons were noiselessly
towered near the snakes
heads. The snakes ignored
the balloons filled with cold
water. The ones filled with
warm water were
promptly and accurately
struck as soon as they were
lowered into striking
range.
The three members of
the pit viper family
(rattlesnakes, cop
perheads, and water
moccasins) are easily
identified by their
triangular shaped heads.
Rattles are standard
equipment on rat
tlesnakes, but they don't
always rattle before they
strike as many people
believe.
The fourth member of
Georgia's poisonous snake
fraternity, the coral snake,
is rarely seen except in the
southern part of the state.
This gaudy littie fellow is
brightly decorated with
bands of yellow, red, and
black. The harlequin king
snake also has bands of
red, yellow, and black. You
can tell the difference
between the two by the
sequence of the colors. If
the red bands are next to
the yellow ones, It is a
coral and poisonous. If the
red bands are next to the
black bands, it is a king
snake and beneficial to
man. An easy way to
remember the difference
is “Red and black- friend
of Jack. Red and yellow
kill a fellow".
If you or one of your
companions is ever bitten
by a poisonous snake, don't
apply tourniquets and cut
X's on the punctures like
the heros do in the western
epics. This type of first aid
by an untrained person is
considerably more
dangerous than the snake
bite. Apply cold packs to
the bite area and get the
victim to a doctor or
hospital as soon as
possible. There should be
as little physical exertion
as possible by the victim.
Try to keep the patient as
calm as possible. Snake
bites are not as deadly as
most people believe. More
people die from insect
bites than by snake bites.
Snake meat is quite
tasty. In fact, Ross Allen's
Reptile Institute in Silver
Springs, Florida cans
snake meat commercially.
If you do happen to meet a
large rattler, and he comes
out second best, take him
home to your wife and ask
her to cook him for you.
(Boy, I would like to see
that!) The meat is easily
prepared by skinning the
snake, gutting it, and
cutting it into two or three
inch sections and frying it
like chicken. The flavor is
quite delicate and most
people enjoy it. Especially
if they don't know what
they are eating!
The hides of snakes tan
into very nice leather. Skin
the snake and remove all
the fat and tissue from the
skin. Soak the skin in a
solution of three ounces
slaked lime to one gallon of
water until the scales come
off easily. This usually
takes about three days.
Wash the skin in a solution
of one ounce boric acid
dissolved in a gallon of
water. Rinse the skin
several times until you are
sure all of the lime solution
has been washed out. The
skin is now ready to be
preserved by soaking it in
one quarter pound of alum,
and as much table salt as
will dissolve in a gallon of
water. After three days,
take it out and rinse
thoroughly in cold water.
Now work the skin length
wise over a sharp table
edge until it is dry.
