Young,Single And Living In Perry
Is A Life Os Loneliness For Many
By Joe Hiett
"The biggest thing is to
have to sit at home,
waiting for unmarried men
to call. They never do. So
you watch television, go to
Macon to shop, or wash
your hair and go to bed."
So said two attractive,
over 21, unmarried
women, both residents of
Perry.
The two young women
consented to an Interview
with a tew reservations,
but quickly became
talkative and expressive.
Their subject- the single
person, male or female,
and life In Perry. Both are
over 21, one lives with
family, and one lives
alone.
"I came from a fairly
typical middle class en
vironment," began the

I young woman. "And I'll
admit there have been
problems here. People
tended to remain distant,
except for the ones whose
work forced them to be
friendly. I know everyone
assumed I was married "
She later added that
those "distant" conditions
have improved somewhat,
t but not completely.
"People always asked me
my husband's name," she
said and laughed, "I was
1 guilty of marriage until
proven Innocent!"

MAINTAIN SHERIFF’S OFFICE IN WARNER ROBINS:
I believe in order to provide maximum law enforcement services
at minimum cost to the taxpayers, the sheriff must maintain suf
ficient personnel at strategic locations (based on size and con
centration of population) where they will be readily available to
serve the needs of the people. In other words, the more densely
populated areas of the County require the larger concentration of
law enforcement personnel.
AS YOUR SHERIFF, I WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN AND
STAFF THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE IN WARNER ROBINS WITH
, I ADt)ED EMPHASIS ON SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE
j I PEOPLE.
I am not minimizing the need for law enforcement in less densely
populated areas of the County. People in these areas are also en
titled to and will receive equal protection of the law during my
administration.
MAINTAIN OPEN DOOR POLICY:
All citizens are entitled to access to the Sheriff when they deem it
necessary. It must be realized that it is humanly impossible for the
Sheriff to be personally available to everyone at all times. I do feel,
however, that an effective Sheriff must maintain an open door
policy. In this regard, I will personally respond, as soon as possible,
to any person who feels that she or he has a need to discuss any
matter pertaining to law enforcement or the Sheriff’s Department.

The other single girl,
shorter, longer-haired, and
more conservative, gave
much the same view, with
several significant ex
ceptions. (For simplicity's
sake, the first woman will
be called Jane, and the
second June).
"People here ignore me
generally, as if I don't
exist. They are not un
friendly, or friendly. The
people where I work are
great, and that Is who I
hang out with. I come from
a town no larger, and no
more outgoing," said Jane.
She added quickly that
much of what she would
say would no doubt be very
applicable to all smaller
cities, and even in most big
cities. "On the telephone
I'm always Mrs. ,
not Miss. By the way I
prefer being called Ms.
because I'm my own
person. My mail always
comes in Mrs. So and So."
"I fully suspect some
people think because I am
free, over 21, and am not
married, that I must be of
loose moral character.
Most of the time I couldn't
be loose if I tried, because
there aren't any men
available." she com
mented.
June agreed and added
that she had not dated any
males from Perry In over a

unmarried men who want

She firmly added, "I will
not go into a bar alone.
"Pickup" is written all
over you, and you might
wind up with someone's
husband anyway. There
really is no place for me to
go except to Macon."
The Dating Game
What does a young
woman do at night without
a date? "You either watch
TV, and there aren't very
many good programs
anymore; call a girlfriend,
ride the streets; or go to a
tennis court and wait your
turn to play," June
defined.
Both said that two girls
cannot go to a drive-in by
themselves to see a movie.
"Two girls together at a
drive-in. Boy, they give
you funny looks, like
you're a weird-o." (The
same applies for males
too.)
According to the two,
there are no places to meet
single people in Perry.
"The quality at lounges is
somewhat poor," said one
woman.
If they are "lucky" and
do get a date, what then?
The answer again is to play
tennis, cruise, or eat out,
then go to Macon to a
movie or bowling alley.
Bowling alleys -those
words struck a responsive
chord. Both quickly and
excitedly said they
"know" a bowling alley
would be successful here.
After being informed of the
costs of building and
operating tenpin lanes,
they remained firm in
their view. "It would at
tract people from all
around here. It is a safe
place, for subteens, teens,
and young singles. It is
fun..."

for five minutes or five
hours. I would want to be

Shopping Here
Leaving the dating
game, the two young
women turned to other
aspects of life In Perry.
"Do I do my shopping
here? Well, that depends
on what type of shopping. I
don't buy my clothes here,
because the stores do not
have what I want," said
June.
Jane agreed, "And the
shopping hours aren't
convenient for the working
person. On the other hand
the "Mall" stays open
later and has more
variety. I'd really rather
shop here, but..."
June said prices here are
slightly higher on many
things, including clothes,
than elsewhere but Jane
said price wasn't that
much of a consideration.
Both felt more "specialty"
shops were needed, or a
"good" department store.
"What I wear here
definitely has an effect on
the way I'm treated. I I go
in a store or office wearing
my cutoff jeans, a pair of
tennis shoes, and a tank
top, I'm treated as a
teenager. On the other
hand, if I dress up in a
knee-length dress with
flats or low heels, I'm
suddenly treated like a
young married woman,"
commented Jane.
June agreed, and added
that males reacted the
same way. They offered an
unusual idea. "The
population here is big
enough to support a good
department store or more
specialty stores. And their
opening would create more
jobs, people would spent
their money here and
everybody would be better
off."
June has lived in Perry
all her life, and has a
slightly different attitude
about being accepted than :
does Jane, who has been
here only a few years. June
says most people are
"fairly friendly", but adds, •
"I think it is because of my
parents. People know me
as the 's
daughter and accept me
for that reason."
So the city of Perry
comes out with assets and
liabilities. Both women
feel people in general could
be more friendly, and want
more stores and places to
go. But both feel they are
safer here, and both feel it
is a good place to raise a
family....until the kids
become teenagers.
