“Here’s How”
Steve Gray explains how seed hoppers are mounted on no-till planter
during a demonstration last Friday at the local Agriculture Bldg. Gray
said 20 of the no-till planters have already been sold to the farmers who
live within a 30-mile radius of Perry.

Houston County
Agriculture Bldg, last
Friday by Steve Gray,
and a brief talk on clean
water standards was
delivered by Soil Con-
servationist Drew
Bynum.
Bynum also told far
mers to expect inspection
tours of area farms by
state and federal
representatives of the
Environmental Pro
tection Agency on April 6.
Gray said only one trip
over the land from
planting to harvesting is
now possible by using a
no-till planter. He said
the impact of no-till
planting on the future of
corn and soybean crops
can be realized in the fact
20 of the no till im
plements have been sold
recently within a 30-mile
radius of Perry.
By using the no-till
equipment, Gray said
farmers can cut through
surface litter, subsoil
under the row, prepare
seedbed, apply fertilizer,
including Anhydrous
Ammonia, if desired,
plant seed, and spray
herbicides, all in one trip.
He said the no-till
planting method
eliminates the need for
plowing, discing or
cultivating, and that
crops would be better
than ever. By using the
no-till system, Gray said
there is no need for
bottom plows, chisel
plows, sub-sol lers, disc
harrows and cultivators.
With today's
technology, according to
Gray, available water
supply is the biggest
limiting factor in crop
production. He said
conserving and utilizing
all available moisture is a
must for top yields. With

ment, he said there is no
land preparation, and
that consequently there
would be no loss of soil
moisture at planting
time.
He said all plant litter
is left on the soil surface
to increase water ab
sorption and act as a
water-saving mulch.
Gray said the in-row
subsoiling allows crop
roots to penetrate hard
pans and reach moisture
deep within the subsoil.
After penetrating the
hard pans. Gray said
plant roots can recover
water from six feet of soil
rather than one foot.
In reviewing the clean
water requirements to be
achieved by 1983, Bynum
said soil conservationists

"are here to help farmers
make bucks and clean up
the environment.
"Achieving these clean
water requirements
starts right in your
fields," Bynum said.
He said the En
vironmental Protection
Agency officials will visit
Houston County on April
6. He said the main
purpose of their visit
would be to pinpoint
erosion areas.
Bynum urged farmers
to initiate a campaign to
inform the public about
soil conservation. He said
the public doesn't un
derstand what farmers
do in order to provide
food tor their table and
fabric tor their clothing.
