HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL THURS., MAR 23, 1978,
Book Club Members
Review Pair Os Books
The Wednesday Af
ternoon Book Club met
last week on March 15th
with Mrs. E.P. Staples
and Mrs. J.B. Calhoun.
The members heard two
interesting book reviews.
Mrs. F.M. Greene
reviewed the historical
novel, "Maria" by
Eugenia Price. The
setting for the story is
laid in St. Augustine
during the time of British
rule. Maria was a real
person who lived there,
and Miss Price carefully
and in great detail traced
her history, even
establishing proof of the
. three homes she lived in
' with her three husbands.
One of her homes is the
house the city of St.
Augustine claims is the
oldest house in America.
Miss Price pictures
Maria as very strong,
reliable, and liberated,
and weaves a facinating
and inspirational story
around her life.
Mrs. C.H. Tucker
reviewed "The Water Is
Wide" by Pat Conory.
This biography shows the
contrast between the
person Mr. Conory was as
he grew up a typical

product of the old South in
Charleston and the man
he became as he grew
older and returned to
teach on Yamacraw
Island, the inhabitants of
the island are very poor,
very disadvantaged
blacks. Mrs. Tucker
painted a vivid picture of
this man's efforts to
startle his students out of
their lethargy, and the
unorthodox ideas he used
to start them on the road
to learning. The book has
a most surprising ending.
Mrs. Tucker reported
that the University of
Georgia has made this
book into a movie which
is used as part of the
training for all students
preparing for their first
year of teaching, and the
book is listed in all the
reading lists for
Education courses at the
University.
The business meeting
of the afternoon was
conducted by Mrs. F.M.
Greene, vice-president.
Absentee members were
accounted for and plans
for the Spring Luncheon
to be held in April were
finalized.
