Last week Wendell
Ratterree, erected a
Rugged Cross on the lawn
of the Presbyterian
Church in Clinchfield for
the Sunrise Service
Sunday morning. The
service was beautiful, we
had hoped to see the sun
rise behind the cross but
the clouds hid the sun but
the reflection through the
clouds was pretty and the
services were enjoyed by
all who attended. The
men of the church cooked
breakfast after the
service and it was a
wonderful meal. Thank
you gentlemen.

The Easy Way
Mom used to hound me.
Dad would lecture. But I
never really did nothing
around the house. Once
you get used to the hassle,
you just wait them out.
Sooner or later mom
would give up and clean
my room. That seemed to
be Important to her. I
remember listening to
dad go on for hours but I
bet I didn't mow that
lawn more than twice
that year. He'd mow it. I
knew he would. It was a

I remember that first
book report in school.
I discovered those neat
thin condensations. Ten
minutes of reading, and
one hour of writing. My
technique was becoming
a science. When I started
dating I needed money.
Dad said I'd have to get a
job. It was a challenge. I
got one, got fired, drifted
to another, got fired
again. It wasn't my fault.
They wanted a slave.
Anyway, dad stuck up for
HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL THURS., MAR 30, 1970, I
me, I quit working and
dad gave me any money I
needed. He got me my
car, too. School was a
drag, achievement was
for jerks, and I set my
sights on good times
when I finally graduated.
Somehow the good
times didn't seem to
come. I hung around the
house for a couple of
years, but the hassle got
worse. My old man got
more and more tight with
his money. Without dough
I couldn't do nothing or go
nowhere. A lot of my
buddies seemed to have
dough but they hustled
for it.
That wasn't my style,
though. I found an easier
way, booze. Man, with a
couple of six packs I was
rich, successful and

happy. Soon that got old
but when I discovered the
world of pills, my system
was back in full swing.
With a handful of colored
capsules I could get in
five minutes what the
jerks spent a lifetime
working for.
So, that's where 1 am.
But it ain't easy. The stuff
don't come cheap. I have
to sell a lot so I can have
enough left over for me.
And I have to be smart,
the cops keep getting
closer. I was busted once,
but I got off easy. I'm
smarter now. The flash
backs get to me at times,
and the down periods get
harder, but if I can just
keep the supply coming I
can stay up here forever.
Those jerks, my system
is better, right? RIQHT?
