Lefty Greg Carroll
Perry Wins 5-3
Panthers
Shock NE
In Opener
Northeast tried to get to
him early, but did not get
enough and the Perry
Panthers awakened their
bats in the third inning en
route to a 5-3 win over t he
class AAA Raiders in the
baseball opener for Perry
High last Thursday af
ternoon at Panther Park.
The player in question
was lefthander Greg
Carroll, who went all the
way to record the win.
Carroll struggled in the
early going, giving up
three Northeast runs in
the first three innings,
but then settled down and
blanked the Raiders in
the final four frames.
Rightfielder Tommy
Stokes made the fielding
gem of the game when he
robbed Northeast of an
extra base hit by
spearing a long line drive
and turning it into a
double play in the final
inning.
Coach Dave Crockett's
Panthers put most of
their offensive firepower
in one inning, the bottom
of the third. Trailing 3-0
the Panthers came to life.
Kenny Collins led off with
a walk and then swiped
second base. Frances
Bowen then followed with
a base on balls. Randy
Reese plated Collins with
the first Perry run of the
season with a bouncing
single to left. Carroll then
singled to right to load the
bases with Panthers.
Stokes then bounced into
a fielder's choice for the
first out of the inning. A

First Place Trophy
Donnie Fowler of the Perry Dairy Queen Team, presents the first place
trophy to Pat Harman, Dairy Queen employee. The D.Q. team defeated
Van Park Softball team of Perry 11 to 2 in the final game to win the
Hayneville Invitational Softball classic.
Boone scored Bowen and
then Daryl Parker
punched a single to right
sending Carroll across
the pay station. Shortstop
Mike Fowler added two
more runs with a single to
center scoring Boone and
Stokes. Quentin Harvey
then lined into a double
play to finally end the
explosive frame. Perry
was on top, 5-3.
Given a cushion,
Carroll held the Raiders
to only two hits the
remainder of the game to
preserve the win. The
senior lefty surrendered
seven hits, walked three
and fanned four. He faced
an entire right-handed
hitting lineup.
