Governor’s Honors Students
Tommy Johnson and Maria-Eugenia Prendes Barata review the ac
tivities scheduled for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program at
Wesleyan University this summer. The two Perry High School juniors
were selected to attend the six-week program based on top academic
achievement, student interview, student application and their teacher’s
recommendation.

Georgia Governor's
Honors Program at
Perry High School.
Selected for the highest
academic honors in the
state last week were
Maria-Eugenia Prendes
Barata, 16, and Tommy
Johnson, 17, both of
whom are members of
the junior class.
Marla Eugenia,
daughter of Mrs. Marla
Teresa Barata of 1336
Parkway Drive, was
selected for demon
strated excellence and
further study In English.
Selection means both
students will attend a six
week session In their
major subject area and
other independent studies
at Wesleyan College In
June and July.
Maria-Eugenia, who
was recently promoted to
IstLt. In the high school
AFJROTC program,
commands the female
drill team, and is enrolled
in the school Humanities
Program.
She likes drama,

and is a member of the
Beta Club. Marla-
Eugenla plans to attend
Radcllffe College or
Johns Hopkins University
when she graduates with
the class of 1979.
Tommy is the son of
Jimmy N. Johnson of Rt.
1, Blue Meadow, In
Kathleen. He said he has
helped his dad operate a
truck farm since they
moved to Kathleen five
years ago.
His major area of study
at the Governor's Honors
Program will be
vocational agriculture
and horticulture. Mrs.
Betty Gray, high school
counsellor, said this was
the first year applicants
have been selected for
vocational studies.
Tommy plans to attend
Abraham Baldwin
College and study or
namental horticulture
after he graduates next
year. When he finishes
the two-year course at
Abraham Baldwin, he
plans to enroll at the
University of Georgia.
Tommy is a member of
the public speaking team,
the Humanities Program,
and serves as Junior
Assistant Scoutmaster
for Perry Troop 596,
Scouting USA. ,
Students are selected /
for the Governor's
Honors Program based
on demonstrated ability,
student Interview,
student application and
their teacher's recom
mendation.

Programs
Set To Go
Producers on farms
who grew barley, corn
grain sorghum or upland
cotton in 1977 now have
the option for voluntary
diversion for payment in
1978, for any or all of
these crops equal to 10
percent of the 1978 In
tended acreage for
harvest. Program
requirements for
required set aside
remains unchanged.
The payment will be
5.20 for corn, $.12 for
barley and grain |
sorghum, and $.02 for
cotton, times the farm J
established yield times M
the actual acreage for 1
harvest. Zone-half of the!
payment may be made at
the time of sign up based
on intended acreage.
There is also a
provision for payment for
wheat planted for harvest
as grain which is grazed
or cut immature for
green chop, hay or silage. .
The payment rate will be ;ip
the higher of the 1978
wheat deficiency rate or
$.50 times the farm
established yield times
the acres for payment.
The 1978 acreage for
harvest of the crop with
voluntary diversion shall
be limited to the 1977
planted acreage, the total
acreage of NCA crops,
required setaside,
voluntary diversion and
any grazing or hay
acreage for wheat
payment cannot exceed
the farm NCA.
Producers interested In
participating in the
program must sign up by
May 1, 1978. Please con

details concerning these
programs.

Deborah Roberts
Crowned As
Miss Black Perry
Holiday Inn was the
setting for the crowning
of "Miss Black Perry"
Sunday night, April 9 and
was a first for Perry.
Deborah Roberts was
crowned queen by the
Rev. Donald Snead,
pastor of she Greater
Union Baptist Church.
Deborah is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ben
Roberts, Sr. She Is a
senior at Perry High
planning to attend the
University of Ga. fhls fall
majoring in Drama.
First runner-up was
Jackie Hodges a senior at
Perry High, Second
runner-up was Debra
Lumpkin also a senior at

Fund Set
A fund has been
established to place
books in the Tucker
Elementary School
Library in memory of
Hugh R. Hill. Mr. Hill
was principal at Tucker
from 1965 until his death,
March 22, 1978.

Jackie Hodges won the
talent competition with a
selection called "Killing
Me Softly", she was
accompanied by Trade
Easley on piano.
Judges for the occasion
were: Mrs. Francis
Latimore, Warner Robins
High; Mrs. Gladys
Toomer, Peach Co.
School System; Mr. John
Bentley, Fort Valley
State College.
Music for the evening
was furnished byMr.
Jimmy Harris.
