Conyers’ Ace Marty Bruns
....Won Again In His Mustang
Features At Macon Raceway
1,500 Watch Sanders,
Bruns And Rhoads Win
/
Overcoming the
tragedy from the week
before when a Valdosta
photographer lost his life,
Macon Raceway opened
its gates with over 1,500
fans on hand last
Saturday night to witness
a safe evening of auto
racing on the one-half
mile asphalt track.
A warm night of racing
again faced the huge field
of cars and the action on
the track was as hot as
the v/eather. In the late
model sportsmans
feature Bruce Hill took an
early lead, but then saw
his chances at a
checkered flag go up in
smoke when he cooked
his engine. Jody Ridley
then took the lead in his
potent Mustang for two
laps before a cut tire sent
him to the pits. Ridley,
one of the most popular
short track drivers in the
Southeast, lost three laps
in his exit to the pits and,
despite piloting his
Mustang faster than
anyone else when he re
entered the race, wound
up with a sixth place
finish.
Ronnie Sanders, a
familar figure in the
winners circle driving the
Pete Hamilton-prepared
Camero, passed four cars
in one lap - on the number
one and two turns - to
grab the checkers in the
LMS division. Sanders
had troubles with his
racer and wound up
winning the late model
sportsman feature in a
"borrowed" Camero.
Sandy Goss finished
second, Randy Couch was
third, and David Chancey
came across the finish
line in fourth.
Marty Bruns did an
encore from the week
before by winning the
limited sportsman
feature in his beautiful
Mustang. The Conyers
native led from start to
finish in his blue 'Stang
and earlier picked up a
win in the first limited
sportsman heat. Buddy
Dingier finished in
second, while Richard
shotput, discus, long
distance runs; Tommy
Wood: long distance
runs; Tres Sinyard: long
distance runs; Mark
Pike: 120 yard hurdles,
long distance runs; Ken
Terrell: shot put, discus.
This year's track team
should prove to be an
interesting une, as we
have ten experienced
runners, twelve other
eighth graders to add
depth and fourteen eager
seventh graders waiting
their turn to prove
themselves. We should be
slightly above average in
the field events, strong in
Webb, a terror on the dirt
track in Warner Robins a
year ago, came in third.
Clyde Bembry, a veteran
on both dirt and hard
tracks, finished third in
his orange Camero.
A young man who is
getting his act together,
Woody Calloway of
Kathleen, who was a
constant winner in the
hobby division at Warner
Robins a season ago,
finished fifth in his black
Camero. Calloway was
running a strong third in
the limited sportsman
feature, before over
heated tires caused him
problems.
In the street feature of
the evening, perennial
winner Gary Rhoads
steered his Chevelle to a
win. Charles Marsh
nabbed second and Jay
Ballew took third.
Saturday night was
also "Penny Night" as a
flock of youngsiers lined
up after the limited
sportsman feature to
scoop up pocket ful Is of
pennies. 10,000 pennies
were paced on the track
with Jay Taylor winning
