“Jesus”
*
Although there have
been many movies
concerning the life of
Christ, none has ever
been presented which is
as scripturally accurate
as is "Jesus”. The film
relies completely on the
Book of Luke for its
dialogue. But it is given
the revised translation to
make it more palatable to
today’s audiences.
The film covers the
entire period of Jesus's
life. And as He traveled
throughout the Holy Land
so did the cast and crew
of this movie. This
authenticity of locale
adds immeasurably to
the success of the film.
You feel as though you
are seeing the sights and
people that Jesus ac
tually saw.
A British actor, Brian
Deacon, has the title role.
He is a very handsome
Jesus if not as mystic and
charismatic as others
have been. My main
criticism is that he was
not as warm a man as I
think the role required.
He seemed to be con
stantly criticizing his
followers rather than
encouraging them.
I also must confess that
I was brought up on a diet
of Biblical movies which
had super special effects.
Cecil B. DeMille knew
how to make seas part or
rivers turn to blood. In
this film no unusual ef
fects are used. The
miracles of Christ occur
but they are not done with
heavenly choirs in the
background or with
special flourish of drama.
All of the other actors,
outside of Deacon are
Israeli. The only actor
who stood out in his role
Niko Mitai as Simon
Peter. He made Peter a
real flesh and blood
character. The rest of the
disciples tended to blend
together. The same was
true of the women in the
film. No single one was
indistinguishable.
The best thing about
the movie "Jesus” is that
the creators of the film
did not try to embelish
the action or plot of the
story by going beyond
that which is written in
the scriptures. Therefore

Movies Galore
This is Christmas week
and being so it is the week
that Hollywood delivers
all of its Christmas
presents. For the next
few weeks there will be so
many new movies
available that you won’t
possibly find the time to
see them all. The only
problem with having so
much to choose from and
see. is that they have a
tendency to run together.
Plus some which are
worth seeing just get lost
in the shuffle and sink
from sight.
After a few weeks
“Star Trek the Movie”
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiii
recommend it to very
small children because of
the graphic depiction of
the cricifixion. The
cameras are right there
when the nails are driven
into His hands and feet.
and “The Black Hole"
will probably be a little
confusing to you. Both
are space movies and
both rely more on special
effects than on plot. “Star
Trek” is reputed to be one
of the most costly movies
of all time -a mere 42
million to make. “Black
Hole” also has a
distinction. It is the first
Walt Disney movie rated
“PG”. I understand this
is because of the
dramatic tensions of the
plot rather than any sex,
nudity or language.

HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1979
Here at the Christmas
season, it is good to have
this film to view which
gives us an affirmation of
the man who changed the
world. But then Jesus is a
man for all seasons.
Robert Redford and Jane
Fonda on your screens. It
seems like you can’t turn
on your TV set lately
without seeing Redford -
Fonda - "Electric”. I like
Fonda and Redford but
the main reason I want to
see the movie is to see
how Willie Nelson does in
his movie debut. He is
what will really make
this movie distinctive.
John Belushi seems to
be getting all the
publicity from "1941”,
and I look forward to
seeing him in the movie.
But I also look forward t o
seeing Dan Ackroyd,
another "Saturday Night
Live” walkout. Belushi’s
pal from ‘‘Animal
House” is also in this
film. Tim Matheson has
the role of “Birkhead” in
this film. Treat Williams
who was the best thing in
"Hair” is cast in this
movie as "Sitarski”. And
for a final surprise,
Dianne Kay from "Eight
Is Enough” is in this
movie. So you can see
there are a lot of other
reasons besides John
Belushi to go to see the
movie.
The movie my wife
can’t wait to see is "The
Jerk”. I can wait. Steve
Martin only strikes me
funny in short spells.
When he is good, he is the
best. When he is bad, he is
the pits. Plus Bernadette
Peters co-stars with him
and she is definitely not
one of my favorites. The
dumbest thing of all
though is that they made
"The Jerk” an "R” rated
movie. Steve Martin
appeals mostly to young
teenagers and now they
will have difficulty seeing
the film.
In Perry we will have
"When A Stranger Calls"
and "The Prize Fighter”.
"Stranger is a chiller
diller of a story, rated
"R" for violence. It is one
of the best of the horror
movies made lately. Not
on a par with
"Halloween” but almost*
The other film in town,
"The Prize Fighter”, is a
"PG” rated comedy
starring Don Knotts and
Tim Conway. They are
always good.
And if you have room,
there are still numerous
Christmas specials
coming up on your
television sets. Perry
Como, Dean Martin, Bob
Hope and others didn’t
use up all the Christmas
cheer. So take in a
movie, watch a
Christmas special on TV,
or read a good book. In
any event have a Merry
Christmas and a grateful
and Happy New Year.
Be Careful With Christmas Trees
An appeal to Houston
County citizens to
exercise caution with
lighted Christmas trees
during the holiday season
came this week from
Bobby Anderson. Local
Manager, Georgia Power
Company. He advised
persons in this area to
take the following
precautions:
1. Try to use a freshly
cut tree, or at least a tree
from which needles do
not fall off when the tree
is bounced down hard.
2. Stand the tree in
water until ready for use.
Saw off the tree trunk at
an angle at least one inch
above the original cut.
3. Provide a strong
support for the tree by
using a sturdy stand with
anchor clamps and a
container which holds
water. Check the water
supply daily.
4. Keep the tree away
from lighted fireplaces
and heaters.
5. Do not use candles on
the tree.
6. Use only lighting sets
that bear the Un
derwriters’ Laboratories,
Inc. (UL) label.
7. Never, never string
electric lights on a metal
tree.
8. Check lighting sets
for frayed wires, loose
connections and broken
sockets before using.
Dispose of defective sets;
don’t try to patch them.
9. Be sure the fuse of
the electric circuit ser
ving the tree is not more
than 20 amperes. Do not

overload the circuit.
10. Turn off Christmas
tree lights before the
family goes out for the
evening or retires for the
night. Collect and remove
as soon as possible all
combustible Christmas
wrappings as they ac
cumulate in the home. Do
not burn wrapping paper
or Christmas tree limbs
in the fire place.
