“The Jade Unicorn”
By Jay Halpern \<l I > /
The success of The
Exorcist and Rosemary’s
Baby inspired a lot of
follow up novels con
cerning demonic
possession and satanism.
Back a few years ago it
seemed there was a new
one of these every other
week. Then things
seemed to slow down a
little and these types of
novels were not so
common. Now Jay
Halpern has written a
novel that he hopes will
outsell all the previous
"devil” books. I don’t
think that is going to
happen.
The Jade Unicorn is
divided into three basic
segments. In the first we
are treated or exposed to
a series of grisly mur
ders. They are horren
dous events and Mr.
Halpern relates these
events in more detail
than I wanted or needed.
This is the whole style of
the book, excessive and
gross details upon
details. This first
segment also introduces
us to some of the main
characters in the book.
Abe Ender appears to
be the hero of the book.
He is the member of the
District Attorney’s staff
who first gets involved in
the investigation of the
murders. He works with
Lt. Pederson who can
hardly believe what is
going in his city. They
are both baffled at the
start by the murders and
are slow converts to the
plague of evil that is
sweeping New York.
Other characters in the
novel are Adrienne, a
beautiful young woman,
who unknown to her is
being kept as the bride to
Satan; Mercadante, a
powerful businessman
who is in league with the
forces of evil; and
Elizabeth, a woman who
possesses powers that
help her to see into the
future. They all become

involved in the climactic
battle between good and
evil.
On the side of good are
two men. Daniel is the
older man who gives a
guidance and strength to
the more powerful
younger man, Jade. Jade
is an unlikely hero for the
forces of good as he has
lived a dissolute life. Still
he has the “power” and
embarks upon the course
of training that will help
him use it to protect that
which is good on the
earth. The second third of
the novel deals with his
RIVERBOTTOM
RAMBUNGS
BY WAYNE ALLEN
I think that, when I
finally get a chance to
settle down to a normal
meal, I’ll have some good
tenderloin of venison,
perhaps about a half
dozen plump quail
smothered in gravy,
about a quart of those
little ladyfinger peas and
maybe a half a pan of
cornbread to sop up the
juice with. For dessert, if
I ask my mother to
supper, she’ll maybe
bring one of her apple
pies, of which I’ll eat
about half. On the other
hand if she comes she’ll
eat all the birds, for she
dearly loves them.
Finding those birds in
my freezer though, may
prove to be as difficult as
hitting them. My freezer
appears to have been the
victim of several atomic
experiments. That’s
allright though, I’ve
training. This is the
dullest part of the story
as it involves pages and
pages of philosophy, the
likes of which I have not
seen since I last read a
work by Ayn Rand.
The third part of the
story tells of the final
battle between the
mightiest one for evil and
the mightiest one for
good. After the whole
novel has been set up for
this battle you would
think that it would have
you involved in page after
page of conflict. Not so,
the battle is over in a
gotten game out of there
thats up to a couple of
years old, and its just as
good as ever. Because its
prepared and packaged
correctly, even the
surprise I get opening an
unlabeled package is
never a disappointment.
(Except for the time I
opened a pack of rat
tlesnake meat and
discovered that I had
wanted a hamburger and
a milkshake all along.
Herewith, a simple
guide to processing game
for the freezer:
Assuming you have
killed a deer, the quality
of the meat depends
entirely upon how you
treat it. After field
dressing the deer, find a
place to let it hang and
age in a cooler for at
least 5 days. There are
several places around
here that will let your
deer hang, and some of

couple of pages and the
story slides to an un
satisfying finish.
The Jade Unicorn is an
unsatisfactory story
dressed up in sen
sationalized descriptions
of murder and mayhem. I
can’t think of anyone I
would recommend it to. It
has no audience to aim
for and thus should
quickly sink out of sight
in its own muck.

them will cut and wrap
the meat. Be sure they
use a good grade of
butcher’s paper, and at
least a double thickness.
When you place the meat
in your freezer, stack it
loosely so that it freezes
quickly and has some
room for circulation. If
you have to stack it
tightly, every so often
rotate it a bit, especially
during the first few days
in the freezer, as this
prevents freezer burn as
well as anything I know
of.
Small game such as
quail, dove, rabbits and
squirrel are not, exactly
trophy animals. Unless
you want to save the
rabbits feet or the quail’s
wings or maybe the
squirrel’s tail, the real
trophy comes when you
descend upon a platter of
the above mentioned
goods, with appropriate
side dishes: biscuits,
butterbeans, and the like.
I’m not even going to
attempt to tell you how to
cook them, there are
unlimited recipes for
that. But even small
game, like the larger
deer, must be properly
cared for in the field.
I know its messy, and a
royal pain in the haun
ches, but if time permits,
its always best to at least
eniscerate the game as
soon as it is retrieved,
( depending on the habits
of your dogs or the like.
This allows the meat to
cool more quickly, aiding
in tenderness and greatly
enhancing the flavor. If
hunting rabbits or
squirrels, its wise to go
ahead and skin and
quarter them, as this aids
even more in the cooling
process.
Having arrived home,
rinse them good and
double wrap them in
freezer paper listing the
| contents and the date.
As to the matter of
ducks and larger
feathered game, the
quaint custom of drawing
the birds and allowing
them to hang for several
days to age falls short of
my personal reguards as
to proper food. My ap
petite lessens con
siderably at the memory
of some birds allowed to
hang for several days
prior to a big dinner. I
was early enough to help
pluck the birds, which
resulted in a completely
unhungry attitude on my
part.
After drawing and
plucking the birds, (I
prefer not to skin them,
the skin seems to hold
much of the flavor) wrap
and freeze them in a
double thickness of
freezer paper just as with
most other game. I
seldom leave ducks in the
freezer longer than three
or four months. For one
thing, they seem to lose
some of their flavor after
much longer than that,
and for the other, I
usually have so few that I
eat them about as quick
as 1 can get them.
