If you have not had
your fill of horror movies
then you might want to
take in “The
Awakening’’. I haven’t
had the pleasure (?) of
seeing it yet but my
brother-in-law says it is
the scariest movie he has
seen in ages. He loved it,
but he is the same
brother-in-law who took
me to see “The Rocky
Horror Picture Show”. I
sometimes use his
opinions as a gauge since
he is nineteen and a
sophomore at Mercer.
The film is rated “R”
and stars old Moses
himself, Charlton Heston.
The young star of the film
is Stephanie Zimbalist.
She has made quite a
name for herself on TV
with roles in “Cen
tennial” and “Forever”.
For you trivia nuts, she is
the daughter of Efrem
Zimbalist, Jr. who
starred back in the fifties
in the series “77 Sunset
Strip”.
I have been deluged
with press kits this week
heralding a wave of new
movies coming out
between now and
Christmas. There is
something to please
everyone. And a lot that 1
am sure will not please
anybody and will soon
sink from sight.
One of the brightest
spots appears to be the
comedy “Nine To Five”
which will star Jane
Fonda, Lily Tomlin and
Dolly Parton. This is
Dolly’s movie debut and
she has had the honor of
garnering the maximum
amount of publicity from
the film. Jane and Lily
have gotten lost in her
shadow. The film con
cerns three secretaries
who take over their office
by kidnapping their boss,
who is a chauvinist. While
he is hidden away, the

threesome grant raises,
promotions and other
benefits without regard to
sex or race. It is a
message movie told in
comedic style.
Another new arrival
will be “A Change of
Seasons” starring Shirley
Maclaine, Anthony
Hopkins, Michael
Brandon and old what’s
her name? - Bo Derek.
Remember her? This is
her first film since “10”.
This is another “adult
comedy” on the order of
“Loving Couples” which
recently died at the box
office. With Bo in the
lead, this one has a better
chance of surviving.
One that looks doubtful
to me is “Melvin and
Howard”, the story of
Melvin Dummar and
Howard Hughes. Dum
mar was the gas station
attendant who claimed
Howard Hughes left him
his entire estate after he
had picked him up
wondering in the desert.
Paul LeMat plays
Dummar and Jason
Robards, Jr. is Hughes.
This one is supposed to be
a comedy also but it looks
like a sure loser to me.
Michael Cimino had a
hit a few years back with
“The Deer Hunter”, one
of my least favorite
movies of all time. Now
he has a new film ready
called “Heaven’s Gate”.
It is a western and it runs
three hours and forty five
minutes. It sounds like
more of an endurance
test than a movie. Cimino
fills his films with a lot of
violence and action so
maybe it will fly by. I
hope so.
Last but not least,
Christmas will bring us
movies about the super
heroes. “Flash Gordon”
starring Sam Jones will
blast on to the screen
hoping to combine the
success of “Superman”
and “Star Wars”. And
Christopher Reeve will be
back as the blue suited
hero in “Superman II”.
This is the continuation of
“Superman I” minus
Marlon Brando as “Jor
el”. I can hardly wait.
