Back in the fifties when
1 was coming along, two
of the biggest rock and
roll stars were Frankie
Avalon and Fabian.
Avalon had a fairly good
voice but Fabian could
hardly stay on key and
had virtually no musical
skills. How he got to be a
teen idol was always a
mystery to me. Now
there is a movie that
supposedly tells how such
“teen idols” are created.
The film is called “The
Idolmaker’’ and it is
playing in the area now.
“The Idolmaker” gives
an insight into the
background mani
pulators who create the
tastes of the public. A
“Dick Clark” character
is also on view and the
film hints that his
backing of a song on
“American Bandstand”
depended on the amount
of money that crossed his
hands.
The film is rated “PG”
primarily for language. If
you have a longing for the
look and feel of the fifties
then you will want to see
the movie. You can also
enjoy it if you are into the
current music scene as
the movie music has an
eighties touch to it.
I received a copy of
James Michener’s The
Covenant last week and I
am already deep in the
heart of Africa in my
reading. Michener is a
master at telling the long
sagas of people and
places. Some of the
reading is difficult at best
and boring at its worst. I

Little Lessons
—by Earline Ross
Quiet Time
Visiting with a friend
who was hospitalized, I
was blessed by the
sharing of a devotion for
the day.
The blessing has
carried over into my
daily life through the use
of a Quiet Time guide
which has been shared
with me. May its value be
realized on a personal
basis by each individual
who elects to follow the
suggestions.
HAVE A GOAL ... To
know Him, or to know
Him better. (Jer. 29:13;
Ps. 9:10, Phil. 3:10).
Personal devotion is a
true living fellowship of
oneself with God.
HOW OFTEN?
Everyday at least seven
minutes. We are turning
our religious experience
from a weekly worship
into a daily walk with
Christ.
WHEN? The best time
is early A.M. Start your
day asking for His
presence and guidance.
(PS. 57:7,8)
WHERE? Anywhere
we can be alone and
uninterrupted. It should
always be the same
place. It soon will become
a very special place to
you. (Matt. 6:6)
VERSES TO CON
SIDER: Is. 58:2; II Cor.
4:6; Hosea 6:6; Ps. 27:4.
HOW LONG? Start
with at least seven
minutes. A. One-half
minute for guidance. B.

thus have over 700 left to
go. It is going to be a long
haul.
Books seem to be
getting longer and longer.
I also received Gary
Jennings new novel
called Aztec and it has
seven or eight hundred
pages also. With the price
of books these days,
maybe the thought is they
better give you a long
book for your money.
Speaking of long books,
I keep hearing that they
are going to turn The
Winds of War
and War And Remem
brance into a TV mini
series, but I still haven’t
heard anything about a
cast. I hope they don’t
mess it up and put bad
actors in the lead. These
are two of my favorite
books and I want the TV
show to have all the
impact of “Roots” and
“Holocaust”.
I have not had the time
to sit down and study the
new television series. If it
is like last year, by the
time I get around to
watching some of them
they will be canceled. I
did have some inquiries
about whether or not
“The Waltons” would be
returning. It did
premiere last week. But
don’t get too excited
about it all. Rumor is that
it will be on only half a
year and then be replaced
by "Palmerstown,
U.S.A.” Michael Learned
will not be seen this year
as “Mama Walton”. She
has a new series called
“Nurse” that will be seen
later this year.
reading. C. Two Vi
minutes for prayer.
FIRST RULE
WAITING. Hurry is the
death of prayer. Hush
yourself in His presence.
Wait for the glory of His
presence to come upon
you. Seek the power of
concentration. Seek
cleansing. Seek the
illumination of the Spirit.
Above all, seek to con
sciously come into His
presence.
SECOND - READING.
Read the word of God He
has spoken to you from
His Word. Read the
passage set aside for that
day. Suggestions:
Psalms for comfort.
Proverbs for wisdom.
Gospels for knowing
Jesus. There are 31
Proverbs, read the one
that corresponds to date.
QUESTION - Is there a
command in the passage
for me to obey, a promise
to claim, a new thought
about God, a sin to avoid?
Seek to discover what
God is saying to you from
the passage.
PRAYER PASSAGES:
Ps. 107:21 ( Adoration), 1
John 1:9 ( Confession), 1
T h e s s . 5:18
( Thanksgiving), Phil.
4:6,7 (Supplication.)
By thanking Him first
for all He has given, your
list of wants and needs
will not seem so great.
We are reminded that “a
person will not become a
spiritual giant in seven
minutes but she (or he )
will hold her (or his) own.
“Trapper John, MD”
will be back this year but
it will be minus the ac
tress who played
“Starch”. Mary Mc-
Carthy who played that
role died over the sum
mer. A new actress will
be seen as the head nurse.
Pernell Roberts and
Gregory Harrison will be
back. Harrison is
becoming a very busy
actor. He just finished
“Enola Gay” and later
this year will be seen in a
movie about a male
stripper. That is
scheduled for NBC.
While I am out in
California, I should be
able to get some inside
news about the en
tertainment industry. So
if you have any specific
questions, drop me a line
here at the paper and I
will try to get them an
swered.
