game. A persistent
Hornette defense,
spurred by the hustle of
Senior Dawn Daniel and
the quick hands of Junior
Pam Woodard, pressured
the Lady Colonels into
making repeated
mistakes. Coming off the
bench in the second
period, Junior Pam Jones
scored nine quarter
points to up the Hornettes
halftime lead to sixteen,
37-21.
Though the Westfield
Ladies’ offense slowed in
the third stanza to six
points, they held the Lady
Colonels to ten and ad

still leading by twelve.
Both teams performed
well offensively in the

Tommy Thomson and
Sophomore Brad
Beckham. With only two
returning players, Miller
and Pierce, with any
game experience, the
Hornets battled their own
mistakes, as well as the
Colonel team. Too many
turnovers and a low field
goal game, 26 percent,
cost the Hornets their
season opener.
Led by Cater Pierce
with six first quarter
points, the Hornets ex
changed baskets with the
Colonels to deadlock after
one at 12-12. In the second
stanza, Beechwood
managed to gain a slight
advantage and retire to
the locker room at
halftime with a 25-22
lead.
Despite repeated
mental errors, a scrappy
Hornet team surged back
in the third period to
outscore the Colonels, 15-
13, and narrow Beech
wood’s lead to only one at
the end of three, 38-37.
But the last quarter
proved to be Westfield’s
downfall as they added
only four points to their
score, while Beechwood
poured in 12. The game
ended with Beechwood on
top, 50-41. The only
Hornet to score in double
figures was Cater Pierce
with 16.
