County Agent
Says
How did we do with our
agricultural exports last
year?
The year just ended
(October through Sep
tember) was an excellent
one for our exports, says
Bob Glover, Extension
market development
specialist in Athens.
According to Glover,
early returns (a timely
expression this time of
year) suggest that the
dollar volume of U.S.
farm exports will total
about S4O billion for 1979-
80. That is the highest
total on record, and is an
increase of 25 percent
over the previous year.
But what about the
future? Here is how
Glover sees some of our
major export com
modities during the next
12 months.
Soybeans, Tobacco
He believes soybean
exports may decline
lightly. In 1979-80, he
U.S. soybean ex
ports increased more
than 12 percent over the
previous year. Con-

tributing to this gain were
record U.S. and world
supplies, lower prices,
and less competition
from Brazil.
But this year, Brazil is
expected to begin heavy
exporting of soybean
meal, and U.S. exports
could decline in the face
of this competition.
Glover says the demand
for U.S. exports may also
fall because of higher
prices, slower livestock
expansion, and slower
world economic growth.
However, the market
development specialist
looks for a substantial
gain in tobacco export
value. He explained that
the volume of leaf
tobacco exports is ex
pected to increase only
marginally during 1981;
however, higher export
prices could push the
total value up by about 10
percent.
What About Peanuts
Exports of another
major Georgia crop -
peanuts -- are uncertain.

production in the United
States will be down this
year; just how much is
uncertain. World
production is expected to
be about the same as
1979. The output of major
foreign exporters is also
about the same.
According to Glover,
the United States has
traditionally been a
residual supplier of
peanuts. He says it is
likely that our export
volume will be down in
the coming year. Oilseed
production is down
worldwide, and world
peanut prices could in
crease significantly. So
there could be an in
crease in our peanut
exports, in terms of
dollars, even with a
reduced physical volume.

Tight Rope Walkers
Chances are the
comparison of Christians
to Tight Rope Walkers
will not be new to some
folks. But, it’s one I had
never considered until an
incident was brought to
my attention by a youth.
The young person told
of seeing a Sunday School
teacher enter a package
store during a holiday
season. Continuing to
watch, the spectator
related seeing the
teacher leave with a
bottle shaped package.
The teacher, believed
to be an abstainer, could
have made the purchase
for cooking purposes.
Regardless of how in
nocent the adult in
question was, the
reflection was damaging
to the younger one who
could not understand
what appeared to be
contradictory standards.
Puzzled over the
situation, the youth not
only lost confidence in the
teacher, but confidence in
the church was also
destroyed for the time.
How often might we
have been seen con
ducting ourselves in such
away that would cause

our Christianity to be
questioned?
How often might we
have been heard saying
things that would cause
our Christianity to be
questioned?
Whether walking on a
rope extended high in the
air or with our feet on the
ground, the requirements
are the same. If we are to
maintain steady balance,
we must be sure-footed.
Traveling through
Hem, Texas, I read these
words from a Church
Bulletin Board: “As
Christians We’re Not
Perfect, Just Forgiven.”
Christians are Tight
Rope Walkers. We lose
our balance - We slip - We
fall - God in His loving
mercy is there to catch us
- lift us up - help us on our
feet again.
We, like David, can
say: “I will extol thee, 0
Lord, because Thou hast
lifted me, and hast not let
my enemies rejoice over
me”. (Psalms 30:1) .
Let us pray that ob

You And Me
You expect your child’s

regularly, but how many
of us do the same for our
family at home? A child
is about 200 times more
likely to be caught in fire
at home than at school.
It wouldn’t take long to
plan how you would react
to a fire in your home.
Take the time to call your
family together and
decide on the best plan.
Map out two separate
escape routes from every
room in the house. Pay
special attention to
escape from bedrooms
since many fires start
while the family sleeps.
Don’t depend on stair

flooded with heat and
deadly smoke.

Your best escape route
is through a window,
perhaps one that opens
onto a garage deck or
porch roof. Even if you
can’t get to the ground
from there, you can
usually wait safely in the
fresh air for rescue.
Practice Your Plan
If you don’t like the
idea of sitting out on the
roof waiting for help, use
a sturdy trellis or ladder
that’s either portable or
permanently installed. A
knotted rope might be all
right for athletic
youngsters if they go
down hand-over-hand
instead of sliding.
