Spanish teacher Catalina Kern shares family heirlooms with students

Westfield Spanish teacher
Catalina Kcm brought several of
her family heirlooms to her Span
ish classes Friday to show students
about Spanish culture.
Kern is originally from Spain
and came to this country about 20
years ago.
The teacher also used the items
to teach Spanish words. She put the
Spanish names of the items on the
board for students to learn.
Among the items were several
shawls, worn for various occasions.

VOCA students are honored

Perry High School vocational
students were honored Monday
night at the CVAE/VOCA Appre
ciation Banquet.
Seventy-two VOCA members,
teachers, administrators and Perry
employers attended the banquet held
at Quincy's Slcakhousc to celebrate
a year of leadership and social skills
earned through working and voca
tional education.
Awards for perfect attendance in
CVAE classes, one-period-per-day
vocational education courses, were
presented by VOCA advisor Dickie
Erwin. VOCA, the companion club
to the CVAE program, helps stu
dents through contest competitions,
school and community projects and
leadership.
Receiving the awards were:
Robert Cone, Kelvin Minor,
Michael Taylor, George Felder, Ed
die Taylor, Avery Richardson,
Jeremy Thompson and Reginald
Jackson.
Best CVAE student trophies
were given in each vocational
discipline. Winners were: Angie
Batchelor (Agriculture), Jeremy
Thompson (Horticulture), Schnell
Arnold (Food Service), Dennis
Crowe (Transportation), Latanya
Allen (Home Economics), Danielle
Head (Data Processing), Demctra
Ragin (Typing), Kenny Davis
(Construction), Mike Jones

Sue Richard
Richard is the
PHS 'Educator
of the Week'
Sue Richard was named Perry
High School's "Educator of the
Week" this week. She is the
librarian at the high school.
Mrs. Richard has worked at the
University of Tennessee, Macon
College, and Warner Robins Junior
High School. She received her
degree in Library and Information
Science at the University of
Tennessee.
Married to local investment
broker Bill Richard, she has three
attractive step children and two fat
cats.
She and a guest will be treated to
a meal compliments of McDonald's
of Perry.

also been in her family for hundreds

"They would use these to go to
bullfights. The ladies would wear
them covering their hair," Kern
said, demonstrating.
The third hair shawl was black
lace. It was worn to church or
similar occasions, the teacher said.
One of the favorite items among
the students was a red sombrero.
"These arc typical for those who
work with bulls," Kcm said, "much
like cowboy hats arc for men in
Texas."
She also had a Spanish lace fan,
(Woodworking), Jerry Tones
(Drafting).
Other trophies were given out to
honor outstanding VOCA members
and CVAE students. Fred Mclver
won the Length of Service Award
for working the longest period of
lime at his job at Denny's.
Michael Taylor was named the
Most Active VOCA member.
Angie Batchelor was awarded for
having the Highest CVAE Average.
Piggly Wiggly worker Jason
Schofill received a trophy for hav
ing the Highest Evaluation on the
Job.
Randy Stokeling was honored
for having the Most Improved
Grade Point Average from 1988 to
1989.
Stokeling also earned an award
for the Most Money Earned at his
job at Quincy's. Virgil Newberry, a
Food Fair worker, earned the Most
Hours Worked trophy.
The Community Project Award
was given to George Felder, and the
School Project Honor was awarded
to Michael Taylor.
Certificates were given to stu
dents that represented the club at
region contests or at the state con
vention.
Among those recognized were:
Shandrell Bass, Kelvin Minor,
Shimcka Jackson, Latrice Releford,
Michael Wells, Virgil Newberry,
Mark Allen, Todd Bradshaw, Angie
Batchelor and Lisa Ross.
Danzer named
PHS 'Student
of the Week'
Charity Danzer was honored as
Perry High School's "Student of the
Week." She was selected to receive
the award by the school's Air Force
Junior ROTC department.
Miss Danzer, a freshman, is the
daughter of Diane and Bryan
Danzer. She is involved in HOPE
and Arrive Alive at the high school.
Outside of school, she spends
most of her time horseback riding.
She is a member of the First
Baptist Church and volunteers to
clean the football stadium after
games.
She and a friend will be given a
complimentary meal at McDonald's
of Perry.
