The First Book of
Football
By John Madden
The season football camps arc
starting around the state and if you
want that youngster of yours that is
just about to start into the sport of
the fall and winter seasons to de
velop a belter idea of just what the
game is all about, then there is a
book out that may be of some in
terest to you and that youngster.
John Madden, the Emmy Award
winning broadcast analyst of fool
ball and sports has written a book
called "The First Book of Foot
ball."
Madden has followed the guide
lines of writing for the inexperi
enced or the novice in the game of
football and attempts to explain the
pros and cons of the game as well
as define football terminology and
strategics used to play the game
correctly.
There arc several diagrams
throughout the book which define
the positions of each player and ex
actly what job that particular player
is supposed to do in any game
called play.
Also included in the book are
several photographs of the profes
sional teams and individual players
in action.
Madden's description in detail of
the names of each position, the job
of the player whether it be offense
or defense, the different types of
coverage used in a game, and what
coaches expect from a football
player that they arc working with.
Hats off to Tom Kite
Going into the final round of the
1989 United Slates Golf Associa
tion Championship, Tom Kite had
a three shot lead over Scott Simp
son and a four shot lead over Curtis
Strange (the 1989 U.S. Open
champion).
Kile Struggles for par on the
first hole, pars the second hole, and
makes triple bogey on the third.
From that point on the wheels fell
off. What happened?
Instead of analyzing every aspect
of Kite's game that particular day,
fairway's hit, green's hit in regula
tion, putts made, putts missed,
etc.,etc. Let's just say it wasn't
meant to happen for Kite this par
ticular tournament period.

Gets ready for next tourney
Junior golf star Jason Griffin makes a close examina
tion of his equipment as he gets ready to get in a little
practice before the next sectional tournament in the
Georgia Junior Golf Association Championships. The
next phase of this years action for the young Perry
golfer will be at the Landings In Warner Robins on July
26. Griffin had recently won the first place of his divi
sion when the junior championships were held at the
Perry Country Club, and also took first In the Atlanta
Junior Golf Association tournament held at Northwood
Country Club In Atlanta with a score of 72, a record for
the junior tournament, and Griffin.
give the reader a better understand
ing of what it's all about.
There are sections in the book
that deal with punt coverage and
punt returns, kickoffs and kickoff
coverage in the kicking game, pat
terns of plays, short and long, de
fensive and offensive playing and
numerous tips for the novice.
Madden's experience in the game
as a professional player and head
coach of the Oakland Raiders when
they were in Oakland, as well as his
experience as a sports and football
commentator reinforces his
credibility to present to the reader
what it lakes to play the game of
football, and play it right.
This particular book would be
one for the football enthusiast
young or old, or even the local
couch potato's wife and family to
read if they want to be something
besides a statue in the living room
when the traditional Mondav ninhl
football games come on the boob
tube.
At least by reading this book
they will have a better understand
ing of the game and be able to lake
part in discussions about it when
the opportunities arise.
The book is a hardbound edition
and is published by Crown Pub
lishers Incorporated, 225 Park Av
enue South New York, New York
10003 and is available at most
bookstores or sporting goods
stores.
Tom Kite has proven to the
world that he ranks in the elite class
of golfers as far as ball striking,
tournament scoring and competitive
finishes.
His stroke average and money
earned over the past ten years on the
P.G.A. tour is sensational. Maybe
he wanted this major a little to
much, who knows?
Whatever the reason, Kile will
be back. Only a few years ago, the
same man was labeled as "the guy
who just couldn't win one." Now,
Mr. Kite has racked up quite a few
impressive lour wins.
Congratulations to Tom Kile for
his performance on the PGA lour
and watch out, he's not through yet.
