Tough decision
This Kiwanis player had a tough decision to make in
fast order, as he got caught in a run down between
second and third in the game between the Kiwanis
team and Crossroads. Some of the games at
Ochlatchee have had to be postponed or cancelled
due to the rainstorms In the area recently.
Sunscreen protection
important in summer
With summer and summei
sports in lull swing, sun protection
is a must. More than 400,000
people this year will be diagnosed
with skin cancer and as many as
8,000 of them will die from the
disease.
Skin cancer is now the most
common form of cancer and its
incidence rale is increasing at a
tremendous rale.
Just a few years ago, skin cancer
patients under the age of 40 were a
rarity. As the earth's ozone layer is
depleted and as many of us spend
more lime outdoors, skin cancer is
becoming a frequent diagnosis for
people in their 20s and 30s.
The American Cancer Society
advises that education, prevention,
and early detection arc the best ways
to combat skin cancer.
Regular and consistent use of a
sunscreen is the best way to ensure
a lifetime of healthy skin, advises
Dr. Myra Barker, chief scientific
officer of Mary Kay Cosmetics.
"But if you have spent years in
the sun without sunscreen
protection, your best protection
against skin cancer is early
detection," says Baker.
During a skin self-examination
you should look for changes to
moles and freckles, variations in
skin coloring, swollen areas or
sores. Should you detect any
changes in your skin from one
exam to the next, see your
dermatologist.
Whether or not you choose to
tan, you should routinely use a
sunscreen or sunblock product in
the correct Sun Protection Formula
(SFF) for you.
SPF help determines how long
you can slay in the sun protected
from sunburn. To select your SPF,
determine how long it lakes your
skin to turn barely pink from the
sun. Multiply the number of
minutes by the SPF of the product

and you'll have the number of
minutes you can safely stay in the
sun while using that SPF product.
Because children receive an
average of three times more sun
exposure than adults, sunscreen use
should start at 6 months of age
under the supervision of a
pediatrician.
"Experts agree that if all children
would wear a sunscreen with a SPF
of 15 or higher from infancy
through age 18, skin cancer would
decline by 78 percent," says Barker.
The following guidelines should
help prevent skin cancer:
♦Apply sunscreen generously
and evenly to all sun-exposed areas
at least 15 minutes before going
outside.
♦Always reapply sunscreen
products after swimming.
♦Broadbrimmcd hats, caps, and
umbrellas can help protect neck and
face.
♦Protect delicate skin on the
lips. Lips have no protective
melanin so use a lip protection
product with a SPF of 15 or higher.
