about pipeline history
By ANDREA SELLERS

Tom Raines of the Atlanta Gas
Light Company was the featured
speaker at the Exchange Club on
Thursday.
Raines, who has a forty year
tenure with the company, spoke of
some of the obstacles involved with
pipelines.
In 1987 the company laid 77
miles of pipe from Northern Geor
gia to Tennessee.
"You have to get very involved
in the environmental, historical and
archaeological,” said Raines.
Raines group encountered prob
lems with a protected species of
fish, several archaeological sites and
a solid granite river bed.
Each problem was solved in its

John Trussed, chief probation
officer for the Houston County
Judicial system, presented a petition
to the Houston County
Commissioners on April 3 which
requested that the county adopt a no
smoking policy in all county
buildings and public meetings.
"It's an issue whose lime has
come. There is a law in Georgia

own unique way.
With the fish, for example, there
was nothing they could do but
move the route of pipe.
For the archaeological sites, they
were required to call in experts to
determine if the find was signifi
cant.
If it was a serious archaeological
find they were asked to reroute the
pipe.
Other times they simply had to
wait until they got an ok to move
on.
One of the problems they found
was that all the artifacts and arrow
heads they did find they could not
just get rid of.
They stuff had to be given to
someone who would store it.
Atlanta Gas Light eventually paid
Trussed.
Trussed commented on his own
office no smoking policy which
was started four years ago because
of a former four pack a day
employee who died and the death
was linked to smoking. He also
said the Department of Correction
began a no smoking policy last
year.
"It is a health issue," said
Trussed. "Second hand smoke is a

Trussed stressed he is not trying
to deny smokers' their right to
smoke but to protect his own
health and the health of other non
smokers.
Though there were only 28
signatures on the petition, Trussed
stressed, "We didn't make a strong

by saying the commissioners

The commissioners discussed

However the issue was ultimately
tabled until the next meeting.
