Tips for
preserving
old textiles
As you discover old clothing or
textile items among your family's
historical treasures, pay close atten
tion to their storage if you want fu
ture generations to enjoy them.
These suggestions can help in
successful storage:
• Store garments free of soap and
starch as these attract insects.
• Avoid storage in air-tight plas
tic bags; textiles need air. Plastic
can hold in moisture and attract dirt.
• Fragile garments should be
stored flat, but store with as few
folds as possible. Folds should be
loose, padded and arranged near the
outside of the container where there
will be less weight to damage the
fibers.
• A clean white sheet Lliat has not
been treated with a chlorine bleach
for a number of washing makes a
good protective lining within a
storage container of wood, cardboard
or paper because this may affect
dyes, degrade fibers or cause stain
ing.
• If the garment is sturdy enough
to be hung, hang it on a well
padded hanger.
• Store garments in a dark place
to protect them from sunlight,
which can cause colors to lade. Rel
ative humidity of 50' percent or
lower will help prevent mildew.
Changes in temperature and hu
midity should be kept at a mini
mum; therefore, attics and base
ments are not the best storage areas
for clothing. Unfortunately, these
may be the only spaces available.
When this is the case, be alert for
signs of mildew or insects. A really
valuable item should be stored in
the living space of your home.
• To protect woolen clothing
Irom moths, place small muslin
bags of moth crystals in storage
containers or hang them near gar
ments in closed, sealed closets. Lo
cate them above garments because
the protective fumes drift down
ward. Avoid direct contact of gar
ments and crystals.

tooth and they do not realize this

treatment. How does this happen?
Generally stainless steel crowns arc
only put on permanent teeth as
transition treatments. They arc oc
casionally used on young people
who do not have a fully developed
set of teeth. They may also be done
for a patient who cannot, at this
time, afford a permanent crown-or
maybe for someone who will soon
be covered by dental insurance.

son leaves home and is on their
own, regular dental care is forgone
for more urgent matters. Since the
tooth under the stainless steel
crown is not hurting, there is no
motivation to have it replaced.
Often the patient forgets or never
knew in the first place that the
crown would someday need replac
ing.
So what harm is done? Because
stainless steel crowns arc pre-fabri
cated and not custom made, they
generally fit crudely at the gum
line. This causes a build-up of
plaque and bacteria that infect the
gums. ll' there is a gap between the
crown and underlying tooth, then

decay is probable. No matter what
the state of health of the gums,
around a stainless steel crown the
gums arc almost never us healthy.
When used as a transition treat
ment, pre-fab crowns are wonderful
tooth savers. But if allowed to stay,
they arc very much like the wolf in
sheep’s clothing-feeling fine until
one day the gums abscess or the
tooth decays beneath it.
It is important to note: not all
silver crowns are ill fitting. Some
arc white gold alloys that were
Journal
custom cast and precision-fitting.
How can you be sure? See your
dentist and have all your restora
tions evaluated to make sure they
arc serving you as intended.
If your dentist determines that
you do have a stainless steel crown
he will probably recommend re
placement with a porcelain or gold
crown that is custom-made from
models of your teeth. But don't
wait-do it now-- before it is too
late. Whew! I was afraid I wasn’t
going to get to you soon enough.
