Northrop involved with military
By BRIAN LAWSON
Staff Writer
The Northrop Corporation has
issued a press release describing
their role in working with an Air
Force Logistics unit, in converting
the BOM-74C programmable
drone into a decoy target used dur
ing the initial hours of the Gulf
War.
Northrop reportedly worked with
the Air Force, Navy, Lockheed and
other groups in gelling the equip
ment ready and training the troops
to man the decoy devices.
The drones arc shaped and
launched like missies, their job was
to fly in with the fighters over
Baghdad and draw anti-aircraft fire
away from the planes. The drone's
radar profile is similar to a plane’s
and a nervous gunner is unlikely to
have bothered with the distinction.
According to the report the Air
Force is quoted as saying, "The
mission was successful and signifi
cantly reduced the losses to allied
air groups in the early hours of the
Gulf War."
The assembly of the unit to man
the equipment and re-program the
drones was done from scratch.
Air Force Logisitics Command
project officer, Lieutenant Colonel
Kevin McNellis said, "We had to
quickly gather and re-configure the
targets, assemble all necessary
support equipment, gather and train
the personnel, pack everything up
and deploy to the Persian Gulf.
The entire operation was staged in
Southern California, with many
people not realizing they were part
of, or indirectly involved in the ef
fort."
According to Northrop sources
much of their work was done at the
Northrop facility in Hawthorne,
California.
The unit was reportedly ready for
action 24 hours after arriving in
Saudi Arabia.
Northrop is said to have com
mitted, their entire stock of BOM
-74 targets built and re-programmed
from a multiple target role to a de
coy role within 30 days, train the
Air Force personnel on maintenance
and preparation and instruct them

We would like to thank all of the many
people who provided our family with
love and support during Leahman's
extended illness. This difficult time was
made more bearable by your prayers,
visits, cards and calls. His death has left
a vast emptiness in all of our hearts, but
his memory will be with us forever. This
memory will always include the
overwhelming pride we felt knowing
how many people shared our love for
him. Thank you all for everything.
